Game Freak can't even keep their themes straight. Some of them are themed on "what if it was fucking GIGANTIC" and others are just "uhh, make it look slightly different". Things like Garbodor or

The starters' Gigantamaxes have nothing to say; they exist only because "they went fuck we should probably give them G-maxes". Megas were different, because there was a whole host of other things to play on than "it's, like, really big now guys".
I got a sense that a lot of them were potential alternate designs, like Garchomp and Heracross - and thus the playstyle is different from the standard version; or Alakazam and Kangaskhan whose Megas expand on their theme and explore them further. Sure, some Megas were hit and miss but NONE of them made them worse. How can you defend the fact that Gigantamax Charizard is actively WORSE than Dynamax Charizard, and INFINITELY worse than either Mega Charizard?
