Well psychic works the same way. Some are hyper intelligent and others are more mystical. For example in gen 3 many of the psychic pokemon get their power from the cosmos. Dark are the same.

According to Masuda, Dark fits for a few different themes, like fighting dirty, being viciously aggressive against enemies, living in dark places, having a nocturnal behavior, being an outcast and so on.
