Yeah, because it provides more. A new region, new story, 100+ new designs, new mechanics, while all three of those games are just lazy rehashes copy/pasting a previous game and reselling it with minor changes.

None of those are significant enough to change the fact you're playing a kid getting a fire/grass/water starter from a professor who also wants you to map out the Pokemon of the region in a Pokedex while tackling 8 different type gyms and an Elite Four while defeating a Team Evil in the process and stumbling on legendaries. It's like watching the same movie eight times except with different filters and sometimes a new scene added or cut. That's not core gameplay, that's cowardice and dread at altering a tired formula in fear it might sell a couple copies fewer.

Driving and shooting is core gameplay like catching Pokemon and battling them is core gameplay, however not every GTA has you go through the exact same motions every single goddamn time, sometimes you're a mob enforcer fresh out of jail, sometimes you're an ex-gangster coming back home, sometimes you're an FOB, sometimes you're an ex-criminal in witness protection, sometimes you work for the mafia, other times you work against them, or for yourself, or you're in a gang etc.

There's nothing about Pokemon's core gameplay that strictly dictates you MUST be a kid and you MUST be fighting Team Evil, and you MUST be taking on 8 gyms and a League etc, yet they keep doing it because they're afraid of anything else, even though there's tons of unexplored premises and contexts for catching and battling Pokemon.

Dragon Quest is also mostly the same thing every game, and it's thriving.
Final Fantasy is a different thing every game, and the problem is that liking one game in the series is no indication at all that you'll like the others, and the latest games are so far removed from the original games that they're not even recognizable as part of the same series except from a few superficial elements like spell names and recurring creatures.

My point is that the core gameplay is what makes a series a series and expecting it to take a complete left turn just to appease a very small minority isn't viable. As for the story stuff, they only keep to that because of plot structure. They tried a little with SM but stuff like gyms and evil teams mostly exist to break up monotony of traveling and to have "boss fights" that make the player feel as though their progressing. All these things that you mention have reasoning for existing that extends into the games core design rather then just being GF being unoriginal

That's because the writers are big heist movie fags and it provides opportunities for novel gameplay implementations, not to mention the heists are usually optional. Getting rich is the point of city level organized crime so that's kinda necessary, but at least they all have different motivations for getting rich, from clearing debts, to bail money, to living the American dream. Meanwhile every protagonist of every Pokemon game only wants to be the champion and they want to be the champion because.. they want to be the champion.

That is the way you view that because you like competitive, yeah, all of those things are good and important features, but just for competitive alone, if you play the game just for exploring the region and clear the story, then like half of those things you posted don´t matter at all.

Well they did do a morally dubious character with Rose who didn't have a distinguished team. Either way having villains without a team doesn't make sense because who is the player going to fight up until the boss? And again SM did trials instead of gyms but the essence is the same because it doesn't matter what paint you put on it or what you think is better because the pokemon formula is designed this way for a reason and unless you have alternative ways to fix the numerous problems with the games structure that will happen if you remove "teams" or "gyms" it's not going to change. Not to mention it's not just pokemon that doesn't want change.

It's like 50% true. Ultimately you could say the same thing about all the zelda or mario games, they have about as much in common with each other as pokemon games do. A lot of games are just the same shit over and over again actually, I'm surprised people are so harsh on pokemon about it. I'll admit pokemon is a BIT more stale these days, but all the way through the first few gens it felt reasonable. The games do differ from one another quite a bit in other ways tho, like BW feels very different from platinum because they're offering 2 very different takes on the same premise. That's kinda what pokemon is all about, different takes on the same vague premise.
I think it works well enough as is, if anything they should have all the super creative ideas in more spin offs, because spin offs feel shafted lately. Pokemon mystery dungeon had some really good shit going on, I want something with the same level of creativity

It is quite skewed for a reviewer to do such a thing, but the truth is, Pokémon is not all about competitive, and the fact that all the good things in the main games are evolved in order to improve both competitive and shiny hunting is not much better. There are more aspects in the mainline games that really need be worked, Pokémon games are about freedom and explore a vast world, in that regard, the wild area was a really good idea... but was pretty horrible implemented that it hurts.

The only things that are "core" to Pokemon gameplay are:

Shit like badges, gyms, water/fire/grass starters are all relics.

I'd like them to make a spinoff that uses those mechanics in a context completely separate from being the champion. Maybe a game where defeating the evil team is the main focus rather than the sidequest for example, with no gyms but "team lieutenants" to take out. In the end you defeat the evil team and establish the Pokemon league for your region, with friendly NPCs taking over as gym leaders and elite four.
