One of the things I like the most about this site is to see how people have different tastes. There's a lot of threads on "your favorite pokémon", and there are hundreds of them that I never would have considered, and I think it's great.

That's what this thread is all about: can you post here a nice illustration, which you think is particularly cool, of your favorite pokémon BUT with an explanation of why you like it so much: is it related to its design? its gameplay? Any particular memory with it?

Mine is flareon and I explain why underneath.

Do you remember those three eevee brothers in the anime (the first season I think)? Well, with my big sister and my little brother, it was basically us.

When I was little, no more than 10 years old, I had the blue version and my brother the red one, and I played with Blastoise and him Charizard. So once we got to the eevee, naturally, I made it evolve into a flareon and him into a vaporeon, to make up for our type weaknesses. And it became a frequent argument between us as to which one was the cooler of the two. We decided to ask our older sister - who wasn't playing - and she said she preferred... Jolteon. She liked it so much that she then asked me if she could play and she, who didn't like Pokémon, made a whole run on my blue version with her Jolteon as a "main". I think that's the only time I've ever seen her finish a game.

After that, it was a bit of a "fight" between us for years, and now, more than 20 years later, we sometimes laugh about it.

I don't know why I liked Flareon so much originally, but today, if I rationalize, it's because I "see" myself with him: if pokémon existed, like in the Detective Pikachu movie, I wouldn't like a pokémon that was humanoid or too big. I would take one - I think - that would look like a dog or a cat, like a pet in our world. And Flareon would fill that role perfectly. That's why in every playthrough, whenever I can, I take a flareon (female) that I always call the same way.

The funny thing is: i don't even like fire types pokémons.

Anyway, my favorite is Incineroar. I know he’s a very divisive mon but I can’t help but love it. I’m not one of those people who love it because it makes others mad but I like how well its role as a heel is in all the media it’s appeared in as well as irl: the initial leak, the final Smash Direct, and the anime. He’s my two favorite types, favorite color combination, my favorite animal, and themed around my favorite hobby. It fits my playstyle of bulky offense and I love that it’s a top tier threat in VGC. Smash Ultimate has him as a low tier but I love the concept of Revenge and how expressive he is. The smug brute that’s actually a big goofball is one of my favorite character archetypes. I liked Ash’s in the show and how developed it turned out (it’s coming back next week too). Finally, I associate it with my memories of playing through Alola which is the most comfy region. I know he’s not for everyone but I’ll still like him as my favorite regardless of what anyone says.

Jirachi is my favorite mon since I was a little kid because of how I loved astronomy, plus I think it's very cute and it's wish granting abilities are super cool. Finally, it's third eye is the kind of strange/creepy/cute/cool hidden feature that I wish more pokemon had, I was mindblown the first time I saw it open up as a kid (Espurr and Meowstic do a similar thing and they're cool too).

Incineroar is legit a great mon if you can get over it going bipedal, I really like it and Decidueye honestly. It's a real shame that the rampant shitposting on this board has basically destroyed the opportunity to actually talk about either.

My fav is Blastoise. I think i must be about the same age as OP and I also had the blue version when I was a child. Squirtle was my first pokémon ever and its entire evolutionary line has been my favorite ever since. My first run has been with a blastoire entirely (it was about level 80 when i first went to Victory Road, waaaaaay op). He is just cool with his cannons, and I have so many memories with him that I don't see myself loving another pokémon more.

My favorite rotates frequently through 6 Pokémon depending on how I'm feeling, but Mightyena goes back the furthest.
I love hyenas. They're so weird, cute, and horrifying all in one package. Hyenas can be nasty, but they're a lot more intelligent and complex than people give them credit for, and I like how Mightyena isn't portrayed as the typical cowardly backstabbing hyena stereotype. I also love how the first hyena Pokémon wasn't the more commonly known spotted hyena, but rather a striped hyena! (Look them up, they're very beautiful) Even before I knew or really cared about hyenas, I still loved Mightyena because they reminded me of my dog. Other things I like about them are:
>early intimidate in-game
>beautiful shiny that looks like a brown hyena (look them up too!)
>a Magikarp Gyarados situation, Poochyena Pokédex entries reflect the more typical stereotype (mean and cowardly) before evolving into Mightyena, who is noted for it's coordination with pack members and extreme loyalty to trainers who gain their respect.

I've always loved the sea, and anything to do with it. There's something so creepy and addicting about its sheer size. It feels alien. Having lived in a coastal, tropical city most of my life, I became used to the barrage of floods and hurricanes. It was a popular tourist destination too, so beach was often lovely and calm. But it always struck me how extreme water is. The oceans are unforgiving, and they demand so much respect.

Vaporeon is just the most iconic water type to me. It reminds me of summer days, sitting in the sand and letting the clear waves wash over my legs. Ocean spray, crying seagulls. Vaporeon always makes me think of those lazy days.

I've always been a fan of monkeys, I liked a lot of the monkey Pokémon before this one, such as Aipom, Mankey, Slaking if that even counts as a gorilla when it's more so some kind of oversized sloth. But when Chimchar was shown before DP was released, I fell in love with it. It ended up being my favorite starter and Pokémon in general, I loved the whole line. I would end up using it in every team I had back in Gen 4, would transfer it to every gen after that until Gen 7, I still hope to this day that it'll comeback somehow
I just love the design, the variety of moves it can learn, the cry, especially the final form of Infernape, it reminded me of why I love monkeys as animals, they're cute, clever, acrobatic maybe, but they're really cool animals
