The sad thing about evil teams is that they're based around ideas and concepts that could make for potentially interesting JRPG villains if handled properly by much better writers, but literally all of them are dogshit
Its just an excuse to fight long gauntlets of trainers. Team Rocket was the most egregious about that, but theyre all super guilty of it

Not to say they can't be done well, as Plasma and Ghetsis are some of the most threatening villains in the series. But it might be better if they tried to be more like Cipher from XD or Colosseum. If the bosses were actually challenging and the grunts had more variety in the pokemon they use and their motivations were more developed then they could be appreciated more.

They all battle you and follow you on your journey. If only Calem/Serena counts, then you might as well not count Bianca either since she, like Shauna, was just going along with the adventure trying to figure out who she wants to be and posed no competition. Besides, N was the real rival of BW.

I could only see no set villains working out if there was one overarching one like in Nintendo's other IP's. Either that, or they implement some kind of morality system based on the happiness of your Pokemon and yourself as a trainer.

There has to be some conflict, either from other trainers or an expanded role for villain Pokemon.

N is encountered pretty sparingly in the game until the climax of the story. You first meet and fight him in the first town and then the second time you meet and battle him is at the second gym. Cheren, on the otherhand, you meet more often until the mid-way point of the story and is at start of the game. Calem/Serena is also like that, but because of that, it's important to differentiate how much of a challenge they pose as rivals. In that regard, from my experiences, Cheren beats Calem/Serena in this but because of that fight after Castelia City.

B/W Plasma was great though, both for the moral manipulation and because you occasionally got to see grunts who actually bought the phony message and thought they were fighting for Pokemon liberation. It was the natural conclusion to each game having instances of Pokemon abuse up to that point.

That makes me upset. GF can slap the pokemon logo on to almost anything and it will sell well yet they rarely try to mix up the formula. Alola had totems and ultra beasts so I thought they finally realized that they can start adding more cool stuff but then it was just back to the boring basics with gen 8.

I actually liked Cheren and Bianca for having a fresh take on rivals. I unironically think they would have been better if they had better pokemon that also looked better. I can't take Cheren's claims of calculating the perfect team seriously when his whole team is shitmons. Bianca can keep using shitmons though since her character is that she's a shitter who gives up

I liked how the dialogue shows Bianca's emotional state as she gives up on battling. In RSE the rival just mysteriously stops showing up with a throwaway line about being a lab assistant. I kind of like how the game lets us see what happens to the kids that set out on their pokemon journey and don't do well. Cheren is less interesting in B/W but I like how in B2W2 we kind of get a glimpse on a new gym leader and his one throwaway line settled the theories on gym leaders using weaker pokemon teams for challengers

I think you missed the meta-commentary with Cheren. His entire shtick was "I want to be strong to be the Champion" and that's about it until Alder asks him "...and then what?" He's just going through the motions and just trying to fit his perception of the Champion as the best trainer but not anything else that comes with the role because he doesn't know any better. It's what makes him being the first Gym Leader in the sequels the perfect end to his arc: he's learned and is now helping new trainers avoid his mistakes.

I'm so angry that Cheren is now stuck with literally my mom's dog as his """ace""" in every appearance. At least give him something more fitting. I like it when rivals have an signature mon that fits them thematically, like Wally/Gallade/Gardevoir, Bianca/Munna, as lame as he was, Tierno and his dance mons, Hau/Raichu, Gladion/Silvally, etc.

yep. BW and B2W2 weren't bad games. The characters were mostly good and I really enjoyed the time skip sequel concept and what they did with it. The main thing holding them back is pokemon design. The pokemon were just so damn ugly and the characters were just forced to use them cause of muh new pokemon only rule. If there was a romhack that just gave those characters thematic teams, maybe of cool looking underused mons from other gens it would be 100% better.
