That's the canon terminology they use, so we use them. Like how there's no difference between a regular Pokemon and a starter Pokemon, but since the media calls them "starter Pokemon," they are "starter Pokemon." Eternatus is just completely unremarkable by comparison. He has the same qualities as every other third legendary with not much to stand out, a really stupid plotline to set him up, and he's a guaranteed catch. You can't even use his special form like all of the others. The DLC legendaries ultimately made me forget about this thing.

What makes you think this? They already got away with only doing 7 "gyms" in SM and SWSH had the equivalent of 6 gyms. I'm betting come Gen 9 they'll push the boundary further and make it so you only actually go to a gym for 4 of them, wherein the second half of the badges are just gotten automatically as you fight the leaders in some random place like Raihan in SWSH.

They turned all of Spikemuth into the gym for Piers, it doesn't have a trial but at least some traversing is required to get to Piers.
Raihan doesn't have a gym at all. You fight a couple of doubles in the mural place and that's it. No trial, no traversing, no nothing.

As for Eternatus, it's bc it already had its time in the (lackluster) plot rather than some special third version or DLC. It got better treatment than Zygarde did regardless.
