I get the impression that Game Freak is trying to sand down all their edges, some of the more blatant stuff was gone by the time of Gen III but ever since then they've been targeting more and more unique elements of the series and removing them to be the most vanilla series to have the widest appeal but also the least content.

Probably the same type of logic that they used when they said why they didn't add the Battle Frontier anymore. They think not enough people would care so why make the effort. And sadly, with how the 3DS games and SwSh sold, despite all they lack, they must have been right.
