3D transition was tough for them. They had a chance to bounce back with a Pokémon Z but then Gen 7 was ordered to be rushed for the 20th anniversary.

When people say "3D era of Pokémon", what the fuck do you think they mean? They mean the shitty map design, the dumb, annoying characters, the garbage Pokémon designs. I legitimately think it's because SWSH was intended to be a 3DS game. With how the game overall looks and how awful GF is at optimization, hilariously bad pop-in seems like a measure they'd take to make SWSH work on the 3DS. Just sayin'.

Of course, gen IX having the same pop-in would inevitably prove that idea false and I'm half expecting that to be the case.

Gamefreak became incredibly proficient with the 2D platform, essentially 'remaking' the same thing each time. Going from 2D to 3D was a jump because they had to rethink how to do shit they've been doing for years. The difference between XY, SM, and SWSH is staggering. Everytime they manage to get something pat down, they fuck it up entirely the next iteration. Look at PSS from XY. SM's online plaza thing was boring, and the USUM online is absolute dogshit.

Plenty of games got worse graphics when they transitioned to 3D - at first only low-res textures and Gouraud shading were possible.
Few RPGs became 3D at first. They stayed either isometric or used prerendered backgrounds, but the camera was fixed.

Ah right, Sword of Mana. Knew I forgot about a few games. But you're still wrong. It looks fine. Inferior, but the gap is much smaller between those games than XY and other 3D games. Or Sword and Shield, too.

And so on.
Pokemon did nothing of the sort and just made the same 2d game in a 3d engine, which is why all the maps feel so small and why the gameplay feels so outdated.
