>>45678498>What Really filtered people from Pokken DX- Most Pokemon fans and really Nintendo fans in general don't give a shit about competitive fighting games, and were turned off by the apparent lack of content, not understanding how replay value works in fighting games
- Most FGC people got turned off on it since at a glance in footage it doesn't look like a traditional competitive fighter even if it is.
- The FGC, especially this past gen, was handcuffed to Sony/the PS4
- Pokken requires two consoles, games, and displays to run local setups for 60fps for competitive play, further making adoption an iffy propostion for local tounrmanets
- Poor marketing in general
- Held back DLC for Switch version, made it seem like a dead game
- nintendo/TPCI doesn't know how to support a active competitive scene properly. No third party event support after a while; even official tournaments got streamed not on the main Pokemon twitch channel, but on a seperate one, limiting exposure.
>>45678550The phase shift mechanic adds complexity and depth and reneofrces the game's neutral focus: at a basic level acts as an anti-infinite system that forces a return to neutral and then exists as a second buffer layer to neutral play
Additionally, it's a mechanic to encourage adaption: Since different moves have different amounts of shift points (with shifts from 2d to 3d occuring when a certain amount of points are racked up; 3d > 2d shifts happen on any heavy hit), it means you need to consider shift points as an added factor alongside damage, meter gain, and frame data when using moves; and at higher levels of play, actively need to alter your combo composition and move choices based on the state of the match in response to if shifting or staying in the current phase would be more advantagous based on the current situation, the matchup, how the other player is playing, etc
