That's part of the issue. A remake should bring the game to modern standards and include more recent stuff. FRLG is way too close to RBY, I don't really feel like I'm missing anything playing RBY instead. It's not really faithfulness, it's just a lack of creativity.

There's isn't much to them either. It's just exploration, that's not bad bad or anything, but a bit dull. >>46000118 is right, Sevii should have had a league like the Orange Islands. I like how the Ebin Islands in Clover have gyms too.

That annoyed me when I started playing with my nephew recently. I just wanted to bulldoze through the weedle but our pokemon limited to tackles and scratches would get poisoned every time

They needed to spice up Kanto a bit, I like the region, but it's still pretty bland. At least HGSS were able to fix the zombie region from Gen 2. But the Sevii Islands are only really interesting in the postgame, One to Three feels like more Kanto.

You should know by now that when playing remakes it's not about creativity, it's about playing the games on newer, more wireless hardware + extra content.
FRLG does exactly that with it's wireless link and Sevii Islands.

No need for FRLG to be all gay pony pixel glitter everywhere, but no need for FRLG to be so absurdly 1:1 like LGPE either (and thankfully FRLG avoids this and instead hits the sweet spot)

FRLG is literally, objectively, more 1:1 than LGPE.
LGPE at least updated the maps and stuff to have the aesthetic of the Johto games, Pokemon distribution was fixed to not be as bland and give meaning to most areas, and trainers used a better selection of Pokemon.
Say what you want, FRLG are the better games in my opinion, but compared to the standards of remake that we got with HGSS/ORAS they are extremely lacking.
That said, LGPE did make the same mistakes FRLG did, and it has less of an excuse because it came after the other remakes.
There's no reason Kanto should've been restricted and starved of dark types and other Kanto Pokemon. FRLG are the first games that set up the "muh-151 rule" that wasn't present in the older games. OG Kanto was assumed to be filled with other Pokemon and that's evident in all of the forms of media from the time.

Like holy shit, you go out of your way to make this arbitrary Kanto-only rule, and then completely ruin the flow of the game with an arbitrary sidequest that's supposed to hammer in lore from Hoenn without offering you any other Pokemon?
Also, we're just supposed to believe the first couple of islands have exclusively Kanto Pokemon while the other ones are chock full of Johto?

The best thing about Fire Red, is that when the Sevii Islands are presented, you're given the option 'yes' or 'no.' If you choose 'no,' then the adventure fucks off until you CHOOSE to go on it.

It's so simple, but such a game changer on replays. What Gamefreak doesn't get, is that and adventure has choices involved. If you don't want to go to the Sevii Islands and instead would get the 8th gym badge, then you should be able to. It makes each adventure feel your own, and all it takes is a simple 'yes or no.'

While I don't think Fire Red is a total improvement, for NEW players, it's the best way to experience Kanto. I love Gen 1, and beat Red, Blue, and Yellow back in '98-'99, it's hard to get someone without nostalgia to enjoy.

Fire Red and Leaf Green do a great job of upgrading the graphics and gameplay, while not destroying the experience with mandatory cut scenes or force linearity (Heart Gold and Soul Silver). While the added tutorials are a slog, again, for a 1st time run through from someone that didn't experience Gen 1, it's the best way to enjoy Kanto.
