Poor Gyarados just can't catch a break. Aside from its extremely short time as the best Water Type attacker before the release of Kyogre, it's always been in the background, dreaming of the day when it can be truly great. Its greatest hope came in the form of this, its Mega Evolution, but even this hope has been dashed.

Players were hoping that mega Gyarados could be a budget Mega Evolution like Pidgey due to its similar buddy-walking distance, but Niantic had other ideas. By making it so expensive to Mega Evolve, they've put Mega Gyarados into a very awkward position: it's outclassed by other Megas within both of its types, and it's also more expensive to use. Sadly, the only real utility for Mega Gyarados will be in the case of a raid where one of its types brings useful resistances or for players that just want to have the dual-type advantage to simplify what they farm Mega Energy for.

It's probably super fucking hard to balance around that because Zard Y just shits on most of the other megas as-is, and Niantic seems to prefer only making special cups in the 1500 range since it has the widest eligible pool of pokemon. I don't want to play Zard-Y league, now with more Rhyperiors, Zekroms and Kyogres.

You don't, though. If you Mega Evolve a Pokémon once you can just walk with Pokémon of that evolution line to get more energy with your candy. The 200 energy from the event means you can get more for free without needing to raid afterwards. As long as you participate in the event now you will have access to Mega Gyarados forever.

You just mega evolve it once and then walk it? Gyarados is a good PvP and PvE mon so it's worth best buddying, and it has a short candy distance of 1km/0.5km when excited so it's probably going to help you get XL's too?

Basically 5/km that's granted with the candy (so 5km candy gets you 25 energy, 3km candy get you 15 energy, 1km gets you 5). So for something like Gyarados that would be walking 8km to get another run at it, since a second Mega Evolution takes 40 energy. Though fully Mega Evolving a Gyarados that hasn't Mega Evolved yet would be 40km instead.

Just to be clear, you have to have mega evolved once. Not the specific pokemon that you're walking, but the mega is registered in your dex. I think.

Yes, if you have it in your Mega Dex that species is basically "unlocked" for the walking energy. So Mega Evolving Houndoom once and registering it means walking with any Houndoom or Houndour will get you energy from there on out.

Well in PvP you tend to run Aqua and Crunch (or outrage).
It also depends on what fast move you run, I think Waterfall gets to them faster but DB is just overpowered.

The same will apply to a Charmander or Charmeleon too. Only drawback of a Charmander-line Pokémon that hasn't Mega Evolved before is that it doesn't get the 80% cost reduction on the first time. That 80% reduction is the only bonus specific to an individual Pokémon that has already Mega Evolved.

I need a new PVP team, bros. Machamp/Tyranitar/Gyarados isn't working out anymore.

I have pretty much everything to build a decent team; I just get hard countered a lot. Dialga and Togekiss are my worst counters.

Unless it's an All-Star or shiny I don't bother catching them. From what I've noticed, as long as you complete the task and see the mon, it's logged.
About a week ago, I caught mons from pre-Halloween and the first one was still Dratini which I always kept for when I find another "Catch 1 dragon" research.

I might purify one of my alt's Shadow Mewtwos just to Lucky Trade to my main, for what it's worth. Though I also think a lot of people just aren't aware of the benefits of using Shadow Pokémon. I have one that is ONE HUNNIT and another maxed out one that is 15-14-15. ONE HUNNIT uses dark moves with hydro pump and Mr. Fish (15-14-15) uses water and dragon attacks. Both are especially useful in raids.

False, weather boost will raise the IV floor by 2, so finding a 0/0/0 is less common than anything 2/2/2 or above because for some portion of the time it's literally impossible to find. Plus things from trades and research also have IV floors (ie 4/4/4 for Best friend trades and 10/10/10 for research)

Yeah, if I lose 2 sets right off the bat I usually stop playing and come back in a few hours. I had such an easy time up until 2700, but then right when I hit that, the battles had so many more counters. The farthest I've gotten so far is 2756. Shadow sableye isn't particularly good these days (normal seems to be ranked better), and return is extremely desirable coverage.
That said, Sableye also REALLY wants to be XL these days, so you may wish to hold off on investing until you maybe get something more like 5/15/15ish.

To be fair, master league is in a FUCKED state right now. Metagross and Dragonite mostly have play in Premier, but Premier doesn't have a "no XL" mode right now so you'd need to invest like 296 XL candies (or as close as you can) into those to really have a fighting chance.
They're not good in Open-classic.

garchomp (and haxorus) are both sure-fire signs that someone is spending way too much money on incubators unless their luck is insane while also doing some cheeky coord inputs on the side
anything else being past 100 above level 40 is generally a bit suspicuous given the pisspoor spawnrate on most of them, snorlax and dratini don't have enough consistent sources for that and I've not seen anyone with XL togekiss
I'd say gyarados, excadrill, mamoswine and probably swampert are done legit

From what I've heard, the rate increases based on both. (Two Pokemon from Jan. 2019 have roughly the same lucky chance as Jan. 2017 and now.)

literally the only reason frustration is STILL hardlocked is because niantic are incredibly paranoid about player retention somehow when for everything else they've just taken everyone completely for granted
and feel the need to only announce a 3-hour timeframe that happens twice a year at barely any notice hoping people will pay attention to newsposts for that alone (and nothing else)
