The new graphics are bad, the remixed music is bad, the gen 3 battle mechanics fuck with the original games balancing decisions like Charmander being hard mode by giving it iron claw to one shot Onix (and now these mechanics are just about as outdated as Gen 1 anyway). And the most fun thing about the original games, the glitches, are not present.
Also the game obnoxiously tries to evolve your Golbat/Eevee/Chansey with high friendship EVERY TIME THEY LEVEL UP and then displays a message about how it failed. EVERY TIME THEY LEVEL UP.
It's no wonder the younger fans hate gen 1 when this is their introduction to it. FRLG are stealthily some of the shittier games in the franchise in my opinion, sapping gen 1 of pretty much all it's personality and enjoyment.
And then there's ORAS...which are worse than even Ruby and Sapphire because ORAS ruined all the dungeons and encounters.
HGSS are the only good remakes in the series and even they weren't enough to entirely supplant Crystal
