Where the fuck did that meme even come from? The closest thing I think of the rival ambushing you in Gen I was in Silph Co. and even then you had beds you could use to heal your Pokemon beforehand.

I think it's because Gary is such an asshole in the anime, and people project that onto Blue in the games and make up asshole shit that he never really did.
If you actually go back and play the games, Blue isn't even that much of an asshole. He banters a lot and brags about his accomplishments, but never actually does anything mean.
