At the time, the series was pulling in two different directions. BW the games were the most mature yet, but still appropriate for kids ofc. they had older protagonists, more story, more sex appeal, and more nostalgia pandering. BW the anime on the other hand were very dumbed down compared to Sinnoh & XY on either side.
Gen 5 on the whole is just twofaced from every angle. first foreign region, last 2d game. its yin & yang.
I think if they had leaned into the games' story for once with N, and used hilda & others who are cooler than the sidekicks they used, it could have potentially been the best part of the anime or at least second only to indigo.
