Most of the new mons introduced in gen 4 weren't even in it, for example: magmortar, electivire, mamoswine, rhyperior, magnezone, froslass arent even available at all before getting the national dex. That fucking sucks. Platinum did fix this though, alomg with almost everything else that was bad about diaper. Look up platinum on bulbapedia and scroll down to changes from diamond and pearl. Its honestly shocking how shitty and incomplete diaper are compared to plat. I dont think they mention it there but all trainers, including the elite four and cynthia, have random A.I. I discovered this recently when I played diamond and cynthias milotic used mirror coat three times in a row against my steelix, instead of surf. Yeah let that sink in.
But back to my original point the pokemon distribution in platinum is actually really good. There is a way bigger regional dex and there are a lot of cool niche pokemon to use. The reason people keep using the same generic team is just lack of creativity if we're talking about platinum and not dp. Lack of creativity and also just getting attached to things you catch early, along with those things you catch early being really good in game. (Staraptor is great and the best flying type in the region, luxray is awesome in both design and in game, the starters, especially infernape are really good.)
