I'm all for 2D artwork being well done, but this 3D cover art does look particularly nice.

The cover art for Sword/Shield sucked, and then the expansion pass release plunged that into total shit.

yes i agree. but I want to add the fact that they have come out with fantastic 2D boxart. HGSS looks great in my opinion.

Yeah, Sword and Shield are the outlier here, most of the artwork has been great.
They know how to pose their mascot Pokémon to convey dynamic action, power, pride, mysticism, or something to that effect.
This was understood very well for Black 2 and White 2.

Whereas Sword and Shield's artwork is on the level of early promo mock-up from news site speculation, like this such picture.

I think part of the problem was they weren't sure how to do a good cover in portrait dimensions, where all previous Pokémon games were boxes or landscape (in the case of JP GBA boxes).

Balan was peak Soul but the gameplay was complete shit, same goes to LGPE. Also, when Swoosh got released, one of the issues that many have stated too was how lazy GF were at the box art by just stamping Keg Sugimori art of the box legendary over a random abstract background.

After seeing the Swooshie box arts, I'm happy we got something new at all.
