The pacing doesn't go to shit until after the halfway point, before that it's just terribly mediocre. When you beat the 6th gym, cut your expectations for what's left in half, then cut that in half too.
Or just pay for the DLC!!!!

I would say it plays like one big well designed wild area, with some story and side content to keep you entertained. plus the new mons. probably like a few hours of entertainment in each. whether it is worth it is up to you.
