Mt. Moon in GSC/HGSS is a completely optional late-game location. You can just bypass it by flying, its purpose from the original games is completely gone. It isn't crucial in any way.
And the Underground Path is even more useless, since it doesn't even have wild Pokemon.
The fact that they gave it a story of being closed due to Bikers fighting inside is actually much more interesting from the world-building point of view than letting it be there. At least it gave this forgettable roadblock location some story. Even GF admits to that, since despite all the restored/added content in HGSS Kanto, they still left it closed.
Of all the GSC Kanto complaints I heard so far, bitching about an empty, purposeless and bypassable corridor being removed is absolutely the most retarded and nitpicky one.
I will really never ever understand those people who would like to remove all the plot progression from sequel Kanto and make it a blatant carbon copy of Genwun. Sure, GSC Kanto lacked content but brainlessly restoring genwun content is just the laziest and most unexciting way to "fix" it.
