Iris's return was much more controversial and Gary's return was considered to be pretty good. In comparison I guess most people just felt the Dawn return was a bit boring I guess.

I remember most people liking Iris' episode. Disregarding that, both Iris and Gary's episodes had active threads in the week building up to the episode, unlike what Dawn had.

I remember the Iris return differently with Irisfags and XYfags going to war and people were debating whether or not Iris actually deserved the role of Champion or if the battle made sense/did Iris throw, etc

Okay, let's be real here. This return is underwhelming. The cute scenes with Koharu are fun but that's basically it?

She got 2 episodes and yet somehow both of them end up being rushed.

My opinion on Dawn's returning was that it was underwhelming and a bit boring and that's what I said the general consensus on the first episode of it as well. I said the Iris return was pretty controversial because of Ashfags and Irisfags going at it because that's literally the posts I saw and read. How did I lie about the Gary return when I said it was pretty well-received? I don't know where you got the idea that I was a Dawnfag, but padt has a hard on for the idea that everyone posting is doing it as some sort of ploy so this is pretty par for the course.

Eh, the shit between Iris and Ash dwindled very quickly. Fairly soon after the episode aired most people agreed it was a good one, with good animation and nice interactions.

That and the novelty of old character returning has worn off since so many have showed up this series. The writers should try to make the returns meaningful to the stories of Ash, Go, and Koharu.

I'm not gonna complain too much since i'm glad she's back at all, but why are the character returns so brief nowadays?

May returned for 4 I believe, while Dawn returned for a ton in BW. Why is it usually just 1 or 2 episodes at best now?

Because character reappearances were essentially limited to 1 a season, so they could be dragged out more.
PM is bringing back lots of old characters, so there's only limited screen time.

Dawn return in BW was kinda bad, just like Journeys she didn't get anything new and jobbed to Iris. At least her other Pokemon were shown but...eh. It's not amount of episodes but the quality of the return which is also bad in Journeys. Iris and Gary were much better, I understand what they wanted to do with her but Koharu is such a bland characters that it doesn't matter, at least with Goh and Gary, they have some rivalry and is also different to the one with Ash and Gary.

Honestly characters return episodes were always meh, Misty episodes in AG were boring. I think they are better when it's not companions but other characters like Brandon with the Paul thing and Clair helping Iris, etc. but even this Journeys does badly, Korrina was nothing but a punching bag, so it was Lance, Iris was good and Volkner will probably be a punching bag too. It should have been Cynthia since DP build up a battle between Ash and her

Yeah there was arguing over the result of the battle and Iris becoming Champion but how do you say? It was still hype? Ash was finally getting focus on a PWC challenge. There was speculation over a lot of stuff like her being Champ, Ash’s Alola title, Axew, Goodra, her powers/development, win, lose, draw? People were hyped over Dragonite new move and stuff about Iris teaching it subtly from games, Dracovish FINALLY got screentime, we got the awaited mirror battle between both Barney’s, animation/art was REALLY good.

Dawn’s episode is just…bland? Honestly even Gary’s episode was mostly good. Infernape returning was meh, reserved return was sucky, aGary should have beaten Moltres for a hype win, Go/Gary fighting was funny. Cool animation and cool to see Charizard, Blastoise and Bulbasaur again. Project Mew is meh but it at least offered Go a new road to take.

I’m not going to go back and rewatch Chloe and Dawn walking through a forest and feel hyped months down the road.

The problem with current series (XY to PM) is that almost all the characters are ether too noble or too evil. There aren't many morally ambiguous characters like Jessie, James & Meowth.
OS to BW was filled with many morally ambiguous characters including the main character until XY decided to go for more black & white world where good people are too good and bad guys are too bad except Team Rocket Trio.

Current Ash no longer has the brutally honest sarcastic snarky savage personality. Misty became more & more genki while Brock's gag became repetitive since the anime doesn't do anything new with his gags. Furthermore OS Misty, Brock , Gary and Professor Oak used to way harsh on Ash.

If pokemon anime wants their current settings to work then they will need to make all the characters morally ambiguous in the most funny & comedic way.

XY's league was the very first league that didn't have every episode rank in the top ten the week that each episode aired, despite the fact that it's also the first league they were hyping up as being the one that Ash could potentially win. XY's was exciting when it aired because the atmosphere of the show with the new animation and Ash's portrayal (along with Serena crushing on him), honestly made the show feel like it was going in a different direction. But of course when the series ended the same way as usual (Ash losing the league, then the same clean slate with the next saga), it just retroactively became "just another saga" stuck in the middle.

I don't know, but in terms of the west Cartoon Network dropped the show after XY ended and it moved to Disney XD, then Disney XD dropped it at the end of SM and it moved to Netflix, so I assume those two companies not having a problem with letting the show go means that it hasn't been doing well in the west for years now as well.

Misty is essentially at her endgame already, as is Tracey. Brock can just be a better doctor I guess. May is just becoming Top Coordinator like Dawn, and Serena is to be Kalos Queen. Lana is some simple thing, Lillie's is to find her dad, and Mallow is to open a restaurant or something.

Iris reached the highest peak, but losing to Ash in what was more akin to a gym battle than a Champion really downplayed her achievement, as well as making everyone in Unova weak by extension.

In the past, I thought Misty being so similar to Jessie was a bad thing. However now I realised that Misty being so similar to Jessie made her character to work on OS series.

Even now a girl like Jessie would make a better trio with Ash & Goh than Chloe for the show. A beautiful yet vain, greedy and selfish girl who consistently uses her look get whatever she wants while bossing around Ash & Goh would made the show hilarious to work. It might bring back the humor that the original series once had. Currently pokemon has no need for "developed" characters, it needs better comic relief character.

Off course, the show could bring back Misty with better hair style as a referring character and revert her back to her original personality where she bosses around Ash & Goh.

That was never going to happen because Dawn's story ends the minute she becomes Top Coordinator. Iris' end game was never to become champion, but a dragon master, which is just a vague goal like Pokemon Master. This is why vague goals are better in a series like Pokemon. It allows those characters to return and show progress while still being no where near their endgame.

He came across as strong when he actually battled in the Junior Cup. But Iris being the "strongest trainer in Unova", and then losing to Ash with him using Pokemon he recently acquired was kinda shitty. I'm not even a big fan of her, but if it had been a 6v6 or something with Ash using things like Charizard , Sceptile, etc it would have felt more grand and fitting of the first Champion Ash has beat in a serious battle on screen. Her Dragonite has still yet to get an on-screen victory while actually obeying her kek.

That was to show that May was having trouble coming up with her own coordinator style instead of mimicking Ash's battles. May KO'd her opponent in like 90% of her contests battles, she had to learn to come up with appeals/techniques instead of just battling with brute force. That's why she lost so miserably to Solidad who was the most experienced coordinator at that point of the series.

Oh no. I don't think the slice of life theme for pokemon is bad. It just happens that some slice of life animes turned out boring for me. Pokemon at least is ok.
And I wasn't thinking about shounen or action-packed/XY style for pokemon. In this aspect I agree with the nip kids.

I'll just watch some episodes, and visit here sometimes.

I have never had any enthusiasm over gay ships before, or most ships, to that end. So it's kind of weird for me that over the course of this series, I've come to love Ash x Go and I'm not sure why or when it happened. They're just really fun to watch together. Why did Amour make me roll my eyes when XY was new, but Ash x Go gets me, a straight dude, all misty eyed?
