Kinda funny since these were the last games to not get datamined to hell day 1, so it lead to a lot of speculation into disappointment

eh, not true. reshiram had a statue in the furfrou garden and they referenced a johto puzzle in the same garden.

they choose gen 1 for the most megas because they were testing fan reception to them and decided to start with the original set of monsters. that thought process makes sense. giving the kalos starters megas would have been a bad idea because it would either make them
1) ridiculously broken if they were already good and then had a fourth evolution on top of it
2) crippled, if they were balanced around their mega forms and megas ever had to go
