So he'll probably use Sirfetch'd, Dracovish at least against Bea. They seem to get alternating who gets used since Dragonite/Dracovish got Iris, now we get Lucario and Gengar. Sir'fetch'd will get Bea and maybe Dracovish again since it only had 1 battle so far.

True, but it is almost always the weakest and most inexperienced gym leaders where this is the case. Volkner was Ash’s last opponent in Sinnoh, near E4 level, and fought an Ash who had a Pikachu from several regions, a Torterra he raised all series, and an Infernape that was trained by Paul before Ash even caught Torterra and had been raised by Paul for dozens of episodes before Ash raised him for another hundred.
Riolu was born 56 episodes ago and had most of its development off screened, where it had not been used seriously in over 20 episodes. So something Ash only used for about 25 episodes and barely appeared after that.

Yeah, PM is pretty based. They do drop the ball sometimes but I wasn’t going into this expecting the best series ever. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the consistent quality of the recent episodes starting at 62, I hope they keep it up for the rest of the year at least. It’s ok if we have to go into filler hell for a few months next year

The Iris match was a significant letdown and this is coming from a fan. Heavily rushed, Iris was given so much of an ego boost from being Champion and fighting Dragon Masters around the world yet she did not fight like one, and Ash getting by with plot BS.
Imagine if Ash fought, say, Bertha in DP, and she was kicking his ass, and all of a sudden Bertha communicates to Torterra about being stronger, enjoying battles. and whatnot. Torterra hugs her and learns Wood Hammer or something, easily defeating Hippowdon. That was almost to a t how the Ash battle with Iris was.
Ash used two Pokémon he barely raised, one of which he hardly used at all, and somehow defeated the Champion of a region. Meanwhile, he could not even touch two Elite Four members with a fully trained team over an entire series. Even a mid series Ash with Pikachu and Grovyle who used more thought out strategies against Drake did not even so much as phase him.
I would understand if Pikachu fought Iris and defeated her, but this is Dragonite and Dracovish we are talking about here, McGuffins. Oh, this random fossil we found in Galar is stronger than this super powerful dragon who trained throughout Unova and fought other dragons before being raised by Iris. And this other dragon that was significantly weakened by the formed dragon and was a Dragonair somehow defeated a Haxorus Iris trained up for over two series off screen.

Iris match was pretty good. Good animation for a non-Iwane episode and the way Ash beat her Dragonite and Axew evo was well done. Dracovish has 4x super effective ice and unlike BW her Dragonite doesn't have plot armor to ice attacks anymore.

Ash went to visit the opening of a new lab by an associate of Professor Oak, Sakuragi, in Vermillion City. During the visit, Lugia appeared near the ports which attracted the attention of many trainers including a boy named Goh who is obsessed with pokemon and wishes to one day capture Mew. Ash and Goh meet eachother while chasing Lugia which later results in Sakuragi suggesting that they both become field researchers for his lab, Goh being the best friend of his daughter and Ash one of Professor Oak's best trainers.

The series is essentially about Ash and Goh travelling around region-to-region for the lab, seeking out different pokemon and mysteries and recording their encounters whilst Goh captures new pokemon, wanting to capture every kind of pokemon in the world with Mew as his ultimate goal, and Ash witnessing the match between Leon and Lance at the end of the World Championships and inspiring him to challenge it to defeat Leon, the strongest trainer.

Later on, around the time Ash defeated Iris (who had become the Unova Champion) and entered the Hyper Class (The Top 100), Goh learned of and became involved in a project to find Mew and is currently involved in the idea of joining the expedition.

As for the 'rematching' part. Ash is challenging the World Championships which has over 10,000 trainers (everyone starts from zero regardless of their past accomplishments or placements) so he has ended up challenging numerous new trainers but has also battled numerous people he has met before including Korrina, Iris and soon Volkner. It's very likely he will be meeting other old opponents as he progresses and he will likely end up challenging Lance in the Top 8.

The point is that the Journeys episode has terrible writing and Ash won through bs.
When Ash fought Bertha, he had glaring weaknesses and inexperienced. While Ash managed to improvise during the match and dodged one of Hippowdon’s attacks, it was nowhere close to enough to beating her. And he used his Torterra, one of his most used Pokémon in Sinnoh. Ash used this super powerful, tanks Dragonite that not only survived a beating from Iris’s but also defeated a Haxorus that Iris actively trained off screen.

Iris’s Dragonite took hardly any damage from Ash’s and nearly wiped the floor with it, but gets one shot by a single Ice Fang from a Dracovish. Iris’s Dragonite was infamous for its tanking Ice-type attacks, mostly from Ice type Pokémon, in BW, and this was when Iris acquired him. He should have gotten a lot stronger since Iris is Champion now and fought Dragon Masters worldwide while Ash was in Kalos and Alola. A single fossil that Ash acquired only 15 episodes prior that he barely even used somehow one shot that Dragonite with an Ice Fang it did not even get stab on.
I had issues with Dragonite before with how it defeated Korrina’s Misnshao and Lucario on its own, but it also took down Haxorus on its own. That battle was horribly rushed and it showed with how everything was one shot when they should not have been. K2X8A

Also Dracovish fucking wiped to Haxorous by exposing its glaring weakness (that is, the fact that its mouth is a giant weakpoint and its only ranged attack is Water Gun-not exactly a paragon of strength). It wasn't as invincible as you seem to think they made it out to be.
Also Iris' Dragonite surviving so many Ice attacks was always bullshit and I'm glad they've done away with it. I would have been more put off if it survived the attack than if it hasn't. Bad writing doesn't excuse bad writing, but still.

Not denying that, just making the case that Ash at this point has more experience than Ash at any other point (obviously), so I don't the comparison is apt all. This series is clearly building Ash up to be an incredibly talented and skilled trainer, and the writer made this clear in stating that one of their goals was to make Ash "unbeatable". I don't see anything wrong with him putting up a good showing against another talented trainer to show that off.

This is because the main focus of the episode is technically Gou's past, therefore Ash wasn't needed, that is all. Nothing of that sort that the directors and writers are wrapping up Ash's story, given how both Ash and Gou are heavily promoted as best bros forever.

It isn't BW style lol. PM is already a soft "reboot", and from PM's formula, it seems that when Gen 8 ends, next gen continues within PM without the need to do a reboot anymore. Put this in an analogy, it is similar to that of Windows NT, OS is upgraded, but Windows NT fundamentals remain the same.

The worst thing is that Sabrina was one of the few characters that was constantly returning in the games and although in the anime they remain stuck in a status quo (As Detective Conan) she could easily return in some seasons with a redesign (GS, DP/HGSS, BW 2 PokeStar, LGPE) and serve as a bridge for Ash and his friends without feeling forced.

For example, a running gag that occurs to me is that she trying to break her shell tries to lead a double life as Idol and Gym Leader but it always ends badly with her destroying the studio-agency-stage and having to start from scratch in another region .

Yeah, I hate all of it. I accepted dynamax in the series just because I knew they had to shill it. But z-moves and megas can go away. Kiawe showcasing z-moves and Korrina showcasing mega-Lucario was more then enough.

All of them are basically the same, a magic stone/rock/crystal thingy that let’s you boost your pokemon, just make it a ring that can switch the object it is connected to whith a button and then after a few seasons upgrade to some shit that can combine all of them for some giant mega z move bullshit that last 1 turn and leaves your pokemon with 1 hp after using it

I used to think that too. But after some time, it feels a lot better than Mega. All Pokémon can benefit from it, it changes how moves behave and its effects, it doesn't last long so you can't just bet everything on it, not so many transformations so it doesn't feel we're missing something when they drop the gimmick, and so on.
Most of what feels awkward about Dynamax comes from GF incompetence rather than a problem with the gimmick itself.
