GSC is already a very solid foundation, but the gen 4 philosophy of just stuffing the game full of content helped carry it far as well. I can't really pick one over the other.

That's not the Gen 4 philosophy, that's the Morimoto philosophy. He did it in Emerald where everything was mostly the same except for Steven and the BF. The rest of East Hoenn was still a tentacool infested warzone. In HGSS, he doubled down on the gimmicks and never fixed Johto's level curve or the pokemon distribution or added more postgame content to Johto or Kanto, he lazied out and copied-paste Plat's BF.

Being Gen 4 of course. If anything being a remake of GSC made it carry all the flaws those games had. They fixed some of them but obviously not all all. Being a Gen 4 game on the other had meant that it had one of the best battle systems in pokemon, if not the best, and things like Battle Frontier, Gym Leader rematches, mini games and a lot of other small but neat features.

Gen 4 in general was one of the most content focused gens, DPPt were clearly adamant about including every feature from past gens, even bringing back gen 2 stuff that has been left out of gen 3, so when it came time for a remake of the games that probably brought the most features to the franchise morimoto just went absolutely apeshit with it.

Copy and pasting the Platinum Battle Frontier into HGSS wasn't as bad as copy and pasting the Battle Maison into ORAS since the Platinum Battle Frontier had five facilities whereas the Battle Maison was just the Gen VI equivalent of the Battle Tower/Battle Subway. If they made a Pokemon Z prior to ORAS with a Gen VI Battle Frontier equivalent and copy-pasted it into ORAS then I don't think people would be as upset that they removed the Emerald Battle Frontier.

DP were Gen 4 games yet didn't have Gym Leader rematches. Gym leader rematches were introduced in Emerald, dropped in DP, and returned in Platinum.

Being a remake of GSC, the game without a formula, for sure. Being tied to Gen IV's slow ass engine does nothing for it. Could you imagine a Gen V HGSS? It'd be goddamn unstoppable.

I don't think it does "nothing for it." The battles are much cleaner and less pixelated in Gen IV, but I'd agree that the benefits of a Gen V HGSS would outweigh the drawbacks.
