Unova removed but replaced. Gens afterward simply removed. You need to see the difference. It’s gen 6 that started the trend of removing irreplaceable features, and even removing easily replaceable ones, but didn’t replace them

This comment thread shows how divisive Gen 5 was. People either love it or hate it. I personally like them. The OST is great, especially for Iccirus City and Driftveil City. The region is fine and the seasons were a nice addition. It wasn't as boring as Sinnoh or Kanto, so that's a plus. Some of the designs were bad like the genies and elemental monkeys, but it's also the Generation that brought us Ferrothorn and Galvantula, so I can't complain much.

It HGSS you were restricted to planting berries in four berry pots each day rather than in the overworld (the original berry trees in GSC were replaced with apricorn trees), so that was already a step back from Platinum if you look at it that way. In BW they restricted it further by making it a Dream World exclusive feature.

Story and characters is definitely the strong point of BW. And music.
I also liked that they added many cool pokemon that were evolving at high levels. Early accessible daycare and battle subway was definitely a nice little thing i noticed too.

Oh and the gates to victory road was pretty badass.

My favourite thing about these games is how the game forced you to just use the new monsters. RSE did the same thing but I liked the Unova monsters better. I think the Unova dex is the best one. It had great designs and introduced new type combinations we had not seen. I liked how daring the ideas of the monsters were. I also liked how the protags were older than all the other ones. I just think everything about these games was ballsey. They weren't afraid to try new things and do the unexpected.

2. BW's Story, particular the whole Pokemon league climax was epic.
3. The characters, such as Bianca, the Gym Leaders, N, Ghetsis, etc.
4. I love the soundtrack. My favs are Nancrene City, Route 11, Dragonspiral Tower, N's Castle, N's Final Battle and End Credits.

New list of pokemon, and only the new one's, it was a interesting idea, just like how you didn't know how any of the new monsters worked until you used them, and post game you have the ability to use all the older mons again with transfer system(but transporting in bulk was awful it should have taken bank to fix that, cute mini game but maybe make mandatory to play it once, and any other time optional.) and wild encounters had some of the appear to.
I also find it fun to transfer a team of favorites to use for the start of the game, like aron or other gen mon because you can't get them normally at the start it makes the team stand out more repeat playthroughs.
B2W2 are pretty great and I like how they injected more variety of pokemon, I think is a good call because if I wanted a vanilla playthrough with only the newer pokemon I would just play BW, and it's probably one of the more interesting "3rd" version that wasn't really attempted again until USUM.

Gen 5 is definitely my favourite and I think the des being limited to new Pokémon only was good, the world and dungeons looks great and the sprites were good, it was the point where the game could have stayed and become more stylised spritework and it's a shame it went 3d because it definitely feels like that pulls a lot of dev time or resources.
Triple and rotation battles were good and Dreamworld needed to be in game so it's not dead now.

Fights were challenging at times and overall v fun. B2W2 also sick.
