I was tempted to make a thread about this myself, had part of what I wanted to say drafted out already. I'll just say my piece here.

This is the biggest travesty of BDSP. Hoenn may've introduced contests but Sinnoh continued to carry the torch for them. Dawn's contest journey was far more memorable than May's because of all the ups and downs she went through.

The games themselves also added MORE to the gameplay, from the accessory dress-up, to the dancing, and finally to the traditional Contest battle format. Just like OP more neatly and concisely put it, nearly all of it just... gone.

I already know what some of the defenses for this are gonna be, too.

Yes. I care. I loved this feature and it was exclusive to DPPt and Pokémon itself.

Let's Go uses menus to let you dolly up your starter in a similar manner. It takes time to add features like this, sure, but I would've waited for them.

You took the words right out of my mouth. The additions made to the contests in DPPt are contentious but I just love the fact that Game Freak had taken the chance to expand on a feature that was introduced in a previous game. I know this sounds like a really obvious thing to do with a sequel, but with how often they like to abandon these kinds of gameplay features, it's becoming more of a feather in Gen 4's cap as the years pass by. At the very least I would have wanted them to copy and paste the performances from ORAS to this game but instead it just gets gutted and presented to us as if the fanbase wouldn't notice or care about this component of the DPPt experience. I speak as someone who sneered at Pokemon Contests just as much as a majority of kids did when they were first introduced but fell in love with them after giving them a proper chance. People did care, people took the time to learn and appreciate the mechanics and the effort that was put into a completely optional game mode, it's just a shame that Game Freak doesn't see value in these kinds of things anymore.

before anyone starts shit contests peaked in platinum and yall just never played them. collecting different rare costume items was fun, having an actual USE for spare pokemon caught for the dex was fun. being able to look through all the pokemon you caught to find a good contest moveset and wrecking house was satisfying okay? it was also a great change of pace from the main game and it kept the underground from getting stale.

Not that point, you might as well remove the rhythm game too. Like the Battle Frontier, these are mechanics that should not have been abandoned because of the initial reception. Why is it okay to pander to niche communities like the Shiny Hunters but it's not okay to do the same with other single player content like the Battle Frontier and Pokemon Contests. Contest fans aren't going to like it for obvious reasons and everyone else is just going to ignore it for its lack of depth, nobody wins here.

Man I sure hope you're right. If zoomers really don't get enjoyment out of stuff like contests, then it's their loss. I loved learning these things and I loved decorating my Pokemon with ribbons. I'm honestly more upset at the fact that this is more than likely the final time we're ever going to see contests featured in a Pokemon game again and they waste this last opportunity to make something memorable, challenging and rewarding with a crappy rhythm game.

I don't care about the contests per se, but is getting ribbons fast and easy in BDSP? I like whatever gets my Pokemon their ribbons fastest, so I prefer poffins to pokeblocks but Gen III contests to than Gen IV super contests.

RSE really isn't relevant to BDSP. Dancing was in DP and Pt. I don't know what kind of point you're trying to make here because RSE (and ORAS) also had museum art as a reward for winning. DPPt would do portrait art with your dressed up pokemon.

I didn't get a chance to see if BDSP even kept THAT part either, but holy hell. The defenses for the contest content being so thin are terribly weak.

Milotic is such an easy Pokemon to get started coordinating with if only because of its evo requirements, made it easy for me to get started. I always liked how the game encouraged the player to pick up a new team dedicated to playing the contests. Sure, you could get through all the Master Rank stuff with one Pokemon but it would be way more fun to get a set of 5 for each category.

People here are saying Contests are a slog, but actually when getting my Gold Trainer Card in Emerald it was the Battle Frontier, and the Battle Pyramid in particular, that took the longest. The Contests were fast thanks to Claydol, lol.

I cared a lot about hoenn contests when I was a kid playing emerald. I beat the master rank in all categories to fill up the museum. I never cared about sinnoh contests though, they took way too long with the dress up and dance parts
