But that doesn't teach me the basics. I want to actually learn how to make a team on my own. There has to be a formula for building teams.

You should study established teams, strategies, and synergies first and see what works and why before you try to reverse engineer a competitive team to your personal taste. Pick a couple VGC players and watch them if you can tolerate 'Poke'Tubers'. Or just do whatever the fuck you want and accept the fact you'll lose. Eventually your rank will be so low you'll only play against other novices anyway.
