desu Pokémon in general is all nostalgia, or more accurately riding on FOMO marketing from the late 1990s.

Also what >>48890959 said, the sudden disconnect from it's precious evos designs makes it hard to like and for me personally, Carkol was already a bit of a hard sell going from the first one's cool red imposing eye to goofy boy to Gen 1 anime eyes.
It's also not helped by the fact that it's body shape minus the coal reminds me way too much of Magmortar so it doesn't feel like a wholly original design.

Overall the line could have been executed better, seems like three different designers handled the line. Still, I used him in my first play through. No regrets.

There's nothing cool about it, the pile of coal looks dumb as hell and its a very boring design otherwise. It doesn't even keep the cool glowing mono-eye that Rolycoly has and Carkoal is probably one of the worst designs in the entire franchise.

People don't like it because it's a bootleg hybrid of Golem, Rhydon and Magmar and doesn't really do much to properly connect itself to the rest of the line aside from the coal theme.
If the whole line kept consistent to Rolycoly's "minecart-esque coal monster" without being TOO on the nose and retained the glowing eye instead of blatantly going for Toriyama Eyes, it might have been better received.
