Pichu is cute
Pikachu is the OG and has Light Ball
Raichu is for retards with victim mentality
Marill has only gotten stronger as each gen has gone by
Plusle and Minun have anime appearances but it ain't much
Pachirusu was a meta destroyer and has legacy status
Emolga hasn't gotten jack shit outside of the anime
Dedenne is in the same boat as Emolga and Plusle/Minun
Togedemaru got a totem and a signature move
Morpeko relies on the fame of a loli

Marill has never officially been considered a Pikaclone

That was in Gen 5, and Dedennde, Togedemaru, and Morpeko have been added since then (but it's status is shaky since while it's based on Pikachu, it's not Electric type or a rodent), but Sugimori doesn't mention Marill. Pichu is the Pikaclone of Gen 2, Marill is completely unrelated.

I find it odd that as the games go on, it becomes later and later in the story that you can actually catch them.

Marill is a borderline Pika-clone, it's clear that they wanted it to be a big mascot like Pikachu was but they weren't as shameless with it as they were in other gens. I still wouldn't call it a true Pika-clone though, in part because Pichu kind of fills the role better.
Mimikyu is absolutely not a Pika-clone. It's a satire on Pokemon merchandising, which means it's far more unique than the other pika-clones already. Plus it's not an electric rodent, which is kind of the big thing that distinguishes Pika-clones. Also Togedemaru was the Pika-clone of that gen.

Pachirisu has pickup. Caught a bunch and kept battling with them until one of them picked up a Sun Stone which I used to evolve my Cottonee. Only Pikaclone that's ever been useful to me. Of course I released the rest of the Pachirisus.
