Hop is weird because you can see a lot of traits of both Hau and N____ but in practice he's not that similar to either of them
With Hau it's just animation and the general thing of "Rival that picks the wrong starter", as for the other
Rotates most of his team between every fight
Catches and fights you with the opposite boxart legendary in his final fight
It leads to Hop having visual similarities and a similar story role to one character, and gameplay similarities to another completely unrelated character.
The thing that makes Hop unique from either of these is that he takes battling seriously despite sucking ass at it, and is incredibly salty that he's bad at it until you crush his dreams hard enough. His personality, if you're paying attention, is somewhat unique for a rival. I don't know who else can be described as "rival with an inferiority complex".
Hop is a trainwreck of a character, but I honestly think he had potential if Game Freak wasn't obsessed with fellating the player.

Too add on to that, he took the ending of his arc from Bianca without any of the necessary steps to get there. He's just a bad mixture of a lot of other rivals. I guess that's better than SM Hau at least, but even SM Hau's ending makes sense (he sucks shit so he just fucks out of the plot because he's absolutely not qualified to be there). Hop really needed a third version to unfuck his character like USUM Hau (which turns Hau into a kind of Red to your Blue/Green/DICKS/whatever the rival's name is).

Thats how I was expecting Hop would turn out to be at the end, they had the perfect chance with this guy since his backstory was perfectly portrayed for twists like that. Now I can't see it done unless they repeat the same Hop's plotline.

Leon was a fancy figurehead who could fight well. Macro Cosmos runs the league in Galar, provides power to Galar, and also have branches that specialize in Real Estate, Insurance, and Air Travel. Rose was order of magnitudes more important than Leon.

Bede was shit because they didn't give themselves the time to do anything with him. The most important things he does is provide Opal with a successor and kick the shit out of Hop offscreen. He also destroys the ruins and unearths the statue but that was basically by accident, he didn't know what the fuck he was doing. His team is garbage and forgettable and we don't understand why he has a change in personality at the league because it all happens offscreen with Opal.

His personality didn't really change, his motivations did. His dialogue in the postgame story, random appearances on IoA, and the Galarian Star Tournament make it clear that he's still a dick who's full of himself, just that it comes from his position as a Gym Leader successor rather than being Rose's buttboy

Even if that was the case, a character of his kind doesn't have much to offer, I think they summed up his character perfectly, and he still didn't make an impact on people the same way Hop did it. (Marnie doesn't count because everyone knows the shallow reasons why she is popular)

Honestly, this would have been the best option. Further emphasize the parallel between Leon going on a similar journey as the player when he was their age and becoming the champion, have him frame every battle as testing the player's abilities and not using his full strength until the Championship fight, maybe make the first fight against him unwinnable instead of getting beat up by the legendary at the start, and before the final fight have him stop being a cocky asshole and seriously acknowledge the player as the person he'd been looking for to surpass him since becoming jaded and bored at being the unbeatable champion for so long, which he only admits near the end. Not great but still a better rival dynamic than Hop

I agree. Was he your character's childhood bully, or was he just your obnoxious asshole friend? Or maybe a bit of both over the course of the game. Combine that with a simple but effective visual design, a strong competitive streak and always being a step ahead of you (then showing up at the worst possible moment sometimes) and you've got a recipe for the best rival trainer in Pokemon. Not too edgy tryhard, not a fawning simp, and not some annoying sadpast you're expected to feel sorry for. Just the epitome of "THAT kid"

All the other rivals tried to be more than that and/or the player's hype squad. But I think for this setting, Blue nails the idea of a rival Pokemon trainer developing parallel to you.

Honestly they felt pretty similar
Brown boy that's very optimistic and friendly and has a relative that he feels he has to live up to, but who eventually gets frustrated and discouraged by losing all the time (although Hau is more chill about it and takes longer to show his frustration)

Hop isnt particularly optimistic, in fact i would say he is pretty pesimistic given his attitud after only one loss, and Hau doesnt get particularly discouraged by losing, compared to other rivals, i dont disagree they have similarities, but you could say that about most rivals past gen 2
