There is no reason whatsoever to assume Flash Fire wouldn’t work in the battle. There is no precedent and the fact that you are using an example from a FUTURE episode in a battle where a Z-MOVE was used instead of a regular one is peak retardation. There was never a moment where she faltered, hesitated, etc. due to some nonexistent disadvantage she had. In fact, she had control of the entire battle from the moment it started. Houndoom went the entire battle unscratched until the very last attack that it could not dodge. This is an irrefutable fact. Nothing you say at this point will change that.

No, there's no reason to assume that it would have not worked because the anime is perfectly capable of removing abilities as the Z-move example versus Motor Drive has already been shown. Yes there is because there was no precedent? Your example is from a battle in a future series, and it doesn’t even fucking work because two different types of attacks were used, and the ability still worked just fine on the attacks that weren’t Z-Moves. The rest of the shit you’re saying is nonsensical headcanon. The reason why Thunderbolt didn’t work was because it wasn’t a Z-Move. Blast Burn would have been ineffective against Flash Fire just like Flamethrower was.

I don't know if you have a grasp of the meaning of words or you ignore the relevant context of the anime, but yes, Pokemon being unable to dodge moves is something that is reflective of the move being effective and hence reflecting well on the Pokemon that engaged in that move. I hope that simple explanation made sense to you.

No this is your headcanon. She never even implied such an idea. She Mega Evolved because it was a Mega Evolution gauntlet. If it was a regular battle or even a battle in the League, her Mega Evolving would serve no purpose but give her a power boost she clearly didn’t need. The fact that she let Charizard Mega Evolve and use a move shows she wasn’t bothered one bit by it, and she would have no way of knowing Charizard would use Flamethrower as opposed to Steel Wing or Dragon Claw. This fact alone completely invalidates your argument.

Lol what the fuck is this shit? Blast Burn in XY is an attack that covers the entire field. It’s the same reason why Greninja couldn’t dodge it and was only ever able to stop it when it used its Water Shuriken as a shield. Has nothing to do with whatever the fuck you are talking about.

I think you need to rewatch the Volkner match. The distinction between Pikachu's Z-move and his normal electric moves were one of power. Electrive was overpowered by the Z-move. This distinction you've made between Blast Burn and the Z-move is functionally useless in the eyes of the Pokemon narrative.

Out of all 1000+ episodes of the anime, there has never been a single one where abilities that were supposed to nullify attacks of a certain type didn’t work. Even in the battle you are referring to it didn’t happen. Pikachu has used Thunderbolts that are overwhelming enough to combat Legendaries, and even brought Alain’s Charizard to its fucking knees. And it still couldn’t overwhelm Motor Drive. Guess there’s a clear distinction between which moves and which don’t.

Thank you! Yes, the anime did spell it out. The move worked because it overpowered the Motor Drive ability than Pikachu's Thunderbolt was enable to do. The precedent of moves being more powerful than the other and ignoring typings, abilities, etc has been firmly set narratively. And the fact that one is a Z-Move and one isn’t. This is what you don’t understand. The attacks that didn’t work were regular moves, the attack that did was a Z-Move. Blast Burn isn’t a Z-Move nor is it an attack even as strong as one. In fact if you want to get into the games, Inferno Overdrive is only ever weaker than Blast Burn when the base move is one of the 8 weakest Fire-type moves in the fucking game. No actual point you’ve made, if you can even call them that, refutes this.

Part of me kind of liked the idea they had back in DP, where Ash had clearly progressed since his OS days, but the experienced adult trainers still completely wiped the floor with him (same with Paul, he was completely destroyed by Cynthia), but they usually either got surprised by some move he made or saw the promise in him. At the end of the day he's 10 years old and you wouldn't expect 10 year olds to be able to compete against the equivalent of pro athletes of Pokemon Battling, even if you assume Ash is some kind of prodigy.

Though in fairness, in that same series that idea clashes with the idea that Volkner is canonically near E4 level in terms of strength, and Ash and all the other people who got to Lily of the Valley were able to beat him anyway.

Because Gym Leaders are supposed to test Trainers. They're meant to be a challenge, but not unsurmountable.They're not supposed to be unga bunga tryhards no matter the level of the challenger. The thing is during Ash's battles they're always using their strongest pokemon. We know this because the Gym leader usually tells us whoever their main pokemon is, is either their strongest or they had been training with them for years. The Gym leaders never hold back against Ash at least.

Now of course Misty isn't using her Mega Gyarados against new trainers from Pallet coming to her with a Pidgey and Rattata, but you get the point. It doesn't seem like Ash is ever gone easy on.

Since it's very likely that Paul is one of the top 10 trainers in the world, do you think he's surpassed Alain and Tobias. I think Paul's IQ is higher than Alain and Tobias, but they would have beaten him because they have stronger pokemon. Tobias will never be seen again and was nothing more than a cop out to stop Ash from winning because they wrote themselves into a corner with how well he was doing and didn't want Paul to just win instead because of all the themes with Infernape.

Alain on the other hand is different, he might not just be participating in this tournament or the Rankings, but realistically Paul is probably better than him. Ash never did truly fight some of Paul's Pokemon, hell Torterra basically never once fully tried the entire series either.

In terms of smarts, Paul has Alain and co. beat. Paul is just as smart of a trainer as Ash is, and that’s his main strength. Alain and co. couldn’t compare. At the very most Gary would give him trouble and that’s only because Gary is even smarter than Ash is.

I mean, you max out at 6v6. At the end of the day there's just no way to have every important matchup imaginable. IMO the only big missing piece for Ash vs Paul is that there was never a Torterra vs Torterra showdown.

Same deal with if we one day got a wet dream League arc where Ash brings back literally everyone, Ash has so many Pokemon at this point some of them are going to get left out unless you make the arc like 20+ episodes.

Competent Team Rocket isn't necessarily a bad idea, but it does mean you have to use them more sparingly, because if they just get constantly foiled it just makes them look bad. It's like with any other work of fiction where you need to make a bunch of minor villains to ensure your main villain isn't just constantly failing to your hero.

Jessie and James have grown fond of Ash, so I feel like they aren't serious when dealing with Ash. Guess you can say that they're like his guardians at times. But a serious Jessie and James are easily the best TR has. While there's literal retards in TR like that one grunt who decided to battle fucking Kukui in an open field, Jessie and James would use stealth, gadgets, weapons, guns, tanks, mechanical, etc. Plus, James himself is decent at battling and Wobufett can be a threat when he's serious.

The fact remains that no matter what petty title you have associated with you, there is always someone or something else in the world that is stronger than you. Literally the last episode we had, Leon talked about exactly that. Leon was worried him being the strongest meant that was the end of him growing, but he realized there was so much more out there to challenge him.

I think a lot of you guys are pretty unimaginative, it's really not that hard to come up with a new challenge even for a World Champion Ash. Or they'll do what they often do and just soft reboot him again in the new region.

Game Leon also isn't the strongest trainer in the world, only Galar, and losing to an eldritch giant isn't unheard of. The only proof of Leon being a good trainer in the games is that he's a Champion and Raihan could be a Champion in another region (doesn't specify region, but for all we know Raihan could only become Champion in Alola and nothing more).

The issue is how much this clashes with how the advertisements and even other media keeps presenting Leon.
Masters is horrendous as this. Undefeated Champion this, Unbeatable Champion that, Champion, Champion, Champion.
Leon's character begins and ends in being the Champion, except he has to lose because he's the Champion, but even if he loses this is Pokemon and character development is never allowed so even if he lost he's still "the Champion".
Honestly, Leon as a whole is a terrible character concept because his whole concept ends up defeating itself thanks to the format of the franchise. You don't introduce a "end of the line" character like this on a franchise like this. Ever.
Unbeatable characters are only good if they're truly impossible to defeat.

Well stop focusing on the outside stuff. Focus on the anime and what it tells you. Leon wasn’t always some unbeatable trainer, in fact his best friend who isn’t even a trainer anymore was initially better than him. In the anime Leon has lost against a Pokémon and that changed his whole perspective on being a world champion. You can even say he doesn’t even feel like he’s the strongest unbeatable person anymore, it’s just a persona that he has to keep up, which is fine by him because he wants to keep seeking out the best of the best that will test his limits

So I'm one of the returning viewers. Actually came back shortly before hype season from the new OP started. Been catching up on JN and was wondering how this thread reacted when Ash started catching OP mons like Dragonite fully evolved, finally got a Riolu/Lucario and the PWC matches in general?

Him getting a Lucario was pretty cool IMO, it feels like something the show runners always wanted to do but were never allowed to, between the Lucario movie, Ash's aura and the Riolu episodes in DP, or even back in XY when people thought he might get one like you do in the games.

The PWC has been a mixed bag for me so far. Too many 1v1s, but Ash vs Volkner was kino and legit one the best matches in the entire anime IMO.

Back during DP I always felt like him having Gible was pretty symbolic, like compared to Cynthia's Garchomp this was where Ash was at- still unevolved, but someday he'll reach the same potential.

Dragonite was disbelief but the fucker kept pulling through through every fight so it became a favorite.
Lucario was holy shit finally, general dislike towards the overt focus on it even if it was expected, and Reversal asspulls, but overall he's mostly okay.
PWC a mixed bag in general like you said. Too many 1 vs 1 are a total mood killer and makes it hard to take seriously. That, and no old Ashmons being used despite being the perfect time to bring them back.
There's also how dragged on the whole "rivalry" with Bea was and how Ash seemed to lose 50 IQ points whenever he fought her, specially the damn octopus.
And last but not least is that the whole thing feels kinda rushed overall. Very few episodes dedicated to it and when they came they went away just as fast.

Blast Burn was never meant to work ether considering Houndoom , the only reason Alain won because of plot armor. This is how he won every single battle, less skill and more plot armor since he was nothing more than a self insert.

That is basically all of Ash's League Rivals, they're always Gary Stus who just pop up out of nowhere with either new pokemon or are overwhelmingly powerful. It's been that way since Richie. Paul was the only one, because he was subverted by Tobias instead.

I don't defend his plot armor, it's bullshit regardless, but to try and argue that it's bullshit because of game mechanics is just as dumb. Its not game mechanic, a fire type pokemon is resistant to Fire type attack and can absorb them to power up their own attack specially it's a high level pokemon trained by an Elite 4 trainer. During the entire battle Alain showed no skill and just use brute force until just blast burn finished Houndoom off? Even Ash's Torracat resist and outright absorb Blast Burn.

This is how Alain battle come down to, plot amor to cover his lack of skills.

It would make sense if he lost his first match in the Master Class, or the one right before (losing one to Paul then winning one after would work), but at the same time there's just not that much time left over before Gen 9 so I don't even know if they can fit that in unless they go zero filler.
