In hindsight, Masuda conditioned players to expect enhanced games for 3 straight generations...

Zygarde spying on Alola, it was something a little different. I transferred my Zygarde from XY, gave him 50 Cells, and used him to fight UBs and Team Rocket.

I genuinely loved XY and would have really dug a Z. Kalos feels like such an expansive region w rich history, and all the little hints that there was gonna be more to come, feel pretty sad in hindsight. Would have loved to know where the train line went and who "went to get help" from the station.

XY could have been good if they went back and expanded upon the region and trainers, which is what a theoretical Z version would have done.
On its own, it's nothing special. Not the worst, but in the lower half of the Pokemon games.

The first thing to come to mind would be giving your group of friends full movesets.
The next would be to fix the pacing so the first 3 gyms don't take up over half of the total playtime.

No, Gen 2 is better than 7 in nearly every other way. Crystal added a fem protag, the half-hour long Suicune quest, and a battle tower you couldn't even use unless you were Japanese and had a mobile phone. It did even less for changing it's plot than Yellow did.

We can't know whether it'd have been great.
But yeah, the design is great.
That said what he got in SM was already more interesting than many legendaries that did get "their" games.
I mean, sure, Xerneas and Yveltal for instance got "their" games, but they barely impacted the storyline.

Hopefully the Masters event where we finally see Sycamore researching it is somewhat interesting.

Agreed. Reducing Zygarde-Complete to being glorified Zen Mode was disgusting. Same with Ultra Necrozma basically being a Mega Evolution. No, I don't care about competitive nor even practicality in a single-player game. I want to feed two enormous dragons cupcakes/beans/curry, then play with them.

This might be an unpopular opinion but I like these crazy final forms like ultra necrozma and gigantomax eternatus being locked behind regional exclusive gimmicks. It makes the regions feel more special. It was cool when Giratina could go into origin forme in platinum, or Kyurem could fuse with Reshiram or Zekrom in bw2. Then you can just randomly find these crazy rare items in future games and just change into these super unique forms whenever, wherever in future games and it kills the mystique
