The formula shook up again with PM/Journeys, which going off of its Japanese name (Pocket Monsters) is trying to set itself to be the indefinitely lasting iteration of the anime.
Primarily, the current anime is focused on Goh (a new fuckboy protagonist) and his dreams to find and catch Mew (along with every other Pokemon). To achieve this dream, him and Ash are helping out a new Professor, Cerise, in performing research missions all over the world, giving the premise an excuse to put the two anywhere, anytime.
Secondarily, it's about Ash's road to the top in the World Coronation Series, effectively a Global Tournament loosely based on Galar (but prominently featuring Galar Leaders as powerful opponents) that all sorts of top-tier trainers compete in, including Champions, Elite Fours and other especially renowned trainers. As of right now, he's an Ultra Class (the Top 99) making his way into the Top 8, the Master Class, so that he's eligible to face off against the current reigning #1, Leon, and claim the position from him.
