Even Charizard has this design philosophy in place and it's a huge part of why it appeals to multiple demographics, they made it fat and gave it these stubby hands so it wouldn't be too "cool" so girls could like it (the anime especially did a good job of giving Charizard "cute" moments) but still struck a balance to make sure boys would like it.
The only Pokemon that actively goes against this design philosophy is Pikachu, who they've actively refined to be the perfect mascot character once the anime came along.

no they fucking didn't you retard. They just took the Dragon from Dragon Quest and made him orange. Gen 1 Pokemon weren't focus tested to death the way nugen shit is.

Human beings are inherently flawed and vulnerable creatures, anon. If something is too cool it becomes unrelatable. It starts to feel like an unattainable fantasy rather than something you can tangibly reach for. This is fine for something like mainline Monster Hunter where the whole point is that these beasts are savage and feral, but a pokemon is meant to be your buddy. You friend. Your companion. Anon if they made every pokemon just a "cool monster" then they would only be cannibalizing their own consumer base. Why make a new charizard when you can just keep slapping charizard onto merchandise? Having a clear visual identity is important for new mons.

Both of these are correct. They accidentally went too far into the "cool factor" with Greninja and that threatened not only Charizard, but ALSO Lucario.
As PLA shows though Charizard's not too big a deal anymore, they've ironed and rounded their mascot needs into a perfect rule of three with Pikachu (the face of the franchise), Eevee (the cute one) and Lucario (the cool one).
Anything that winds up surpassing any of these three could potentially damage the brand's iconic stability and merch sales.

the only reason Charizard isn’t in Legends is because only starter allows were the Sinnoh starters and the chosen Legends startes were allowed. And the only reason Charizard wasn’t chosen was because Game Freak doesn’t want it to be overshadowed by a regional (notice how there’s an Alolan Raichu but no Alolan Pikachu). If the Legends starters had gotten megas/battle bond forms/etc I guarantee you Charizard would have been the Fire starter for Legends AND it would have gotten two of whatever overpowered mechanic that that starters got.

Digimon's setup is different, at least when it comes to the anime. When your Pokemon evolves into Luxray, it's stuck that way. So it has to maintain cute elements. Digimon revert, so they can afford to have evolutions that are purely cool, because it'll just revert into a cute monster and maintain the "heart".

I don't think Digimon is that far off from this philosophy, you just have to keep in mind it's set up differently.

What? This is unironically AGAINST the current design trend in pokemon. Making heads smaller is the opposite of "kawaii." Look at the starters for Gen 1 and 2 (and eevee) and compare it to the starters later on. Look at the size of the heads compared to the size of the body.

Only reasonable post in this thread. Clearly this philosophy has been in play for the entirety of pokemon's lifespan, there's no one pokemon you can't point out something doofy about, and that's part of the charm. As an avid lover of coolmon like Nidoking, I really do think it's important they don't wind up looking like Digimon or yugioh monsters.
