I'm pretty sure Gen 5 Pokemon were designed with 3DS in mind. Especially the ones like Golurk or Samurott which don't even have full animations outside of 3D games.

I think you need more than 2 categories to really organize the games objectively. Based on changes to design over time, the closest would be something like:

This is not indicative of quality, just how the games were made and with what goals.

I mostly based it on the differences. BW had the full Unova dex and more complicated story making them controversial, then suddenly BW 2 released with a return to a simpler story and tons of old pokemon and characters everywhere to sell nostalgia, which continued in gen 6+, although later ones focused more on Kanto specifically. That doesn't make BW2 bad, just different.

I'd say they were designed with it in mind, but not around it. A fair transition phase where some mons have gimmicks that require them to be more animated, but are still designed for the 2D plane.
Now what's criminal is that Excadrill STILL doesn't have an animation of its drill form in the mainline games.

It's not any more handholdy than gen 5 or 6. The beginning is slow but if you make it to the end of Melemele (equivalent to 2 gyms) a ton of exploration opens up for the rest of the game. Would probably reccomend USUM over SM but either is good.
