I think it works out when you account for the sheer number of pokemon that would have to be different enough somehow to make the metagame even remotely diverse.

A couple already strong mons like Gengar and Alakazam were barely affected. Gengar remained a monstrous threat in OU, Alakazam got access to strong coverage moves like Shadow Ball and Focus Blast. Meanwhile many of previously underwhelming (due to the arbitrary pre-split) mons gained spotlight after the split like Hitmonchan, Crawdaunt, Absol, Feraligatr, Azumarill, Flareon, and of course Sneasel no matter how hard you try to ignore her

80 accuracy is fair considering Stone Edge does 100 damage with way above average type coverage. Sure EQ is better but the only thing that keeps EQ from being straight up broken is the fact that it can't hit flyers. Same with Close Combat and ghosts. However there is no excuse for Wild Charge to have recoil damage.

Gengar can't kill key Pokemon like Dragonite or Garchomp anymore. Especially damning for the split since it was introduced the same gen as Garchomp, the most borked offensive non-legendary Pokemon up until Dragapult. Have fun using the vastly inferior HP Ice which also means you no longer get HP Dark to hit Girafarig with.

Power Gem exists but the name of it gives Game Freak to be a complete fucktard when it comes to its distribution.

They're all SFMAs, so the split didn't help them out very much. Sneasel MAYBE would have been helped, but had no fucking moves. Return was stronger than all of its potential STAB options.
I guess Tyranitar would have also liked to have a physical Pursuit, but it was good already.

Yes, Crawdaunt is very frail. Absol isn't too bulky or fast either. Mawile is shit no matter what, Gyarados was already good just running EQ and HP Flying, Feraligatr was just a worse Gyarados until Sheer Force existed, and the only dark move Azumarill has ever run is Knock Off, which was shit until gen 6.
The fastest dark-types in gen 3, after Sneasel, were ones who would prefer to use special attacks anyway.

Agree. The split sucked, but it made sense after they ruined stats in gen 3.
You can't not have something like that when you can only max out 2 stats, and have to account for natures which give a 10% boost (including to EVs). Every single one of the changes to stats in gen 3 encouraged specialization at the expense of versatility.
Many pokemon people bitched about made sense at their introduction (with the exception of the dark type, that should've just been a physical type in the first place).
Not every pokemon needs to have their STAB be off their higher stat, because that forces them into a different role.
Gyarados had 100 special in gen 1, feraligatr's STAB moves are roughly equal to its physical moves in gen 2, gengar has phenomenal stats and doesn't need STAB in gen 1, and it continued to be good without it. Kingler had a 90 power stab move with 100% crit to make up for its shitty special.

The actual problems are how GF handled mechanic transitions, and designing pokemon that are just shitmons

There should have been exceptions, like the elemental punches so Hitmonchan wasn't quite so pathetic, but they should have been somewhat rare and given only to specific Pokémon, like Psyshock or Secret Sword, rather than 99% of Pokemon having convenient moves matching their best attacking stat for all of their STABs and coverage that make the opposite stat completely ignorable.

There's one move that changes damage depending on which is higher, but it's exclusive to a single legendary.
