Enemy pokemon have EVs for I think the first time in a mainline game. Also have better movesets and team composition than base SM

USUM are hard. npcs pretty consistently have IVs, EVs, and strategies to make them as strong as possible. Some pokemon can break the game, but that has always been true.

it's a pretty tough pokemon game at times. if you're having trouble with the lurantis, try getting a crobat because it completely walls the lurantis

It's not difficult but it has difficulty spikes. I play without xp share, items, or HMs so with those things it shouldn't be difficult.

i just beat that trial, and i'd say that minus the totem battles is as easy as usual even without exp share. most trainer battles so far are one-hit ko'd with a stab move
