Ash and Misty are considered classic cartoon characters across the entire world, no one introduced after gen 1 has this honor.
If you are able to name any character introduced after gen 1 you are most likely a pokemon fan

I was basing off of the front page, but in images yeah, once again Misty and Lillie are the only ones who take up a majority of the images.

I feel like this isnt exactly fair though, Dawn and May are very common words

Thats a good point but misty arguably overrode the actual word "misty" in terms of usage while May and Dawn kind of faded.
I think Lillie is helped significantly by the fact that it's the less common spelling of the name. Most Lillies go by Lily.
Misty I can't truly explain other than 90s kids/gen x being nostalgia obsessed maniacs
