Reminder the only reason ash didn’t get a mega was because GameFreak decided to not give a single Gen 6 Pokémon a mega so the anime team had to literally ask them to make something new that they could give to Ash for his Gen 6 Pokémon.

Its really obvious why Ash didnt get a mega. There was clearly gonna be a 3rd version of the XY games - and you can bet the 3 starters were gonna get their own megas. There's a lot of proof about a third version being planned, from the Zygarde shit that got kicked to SM, the locked door in the power plant, and the fucking unreleased floette.
Then it got cancelled. And the anime was left with a mega-less Asg and a frog that was never gonna get the mega. Thats why instead they decided to give it an unique form.
The reason ashfrog made it to the games in SM was probably a way to tie up the mess Greninja created by not getting its mega.

Kanto got most of the megas to appeal to older fans who played RBY as a child. They were now in their 20s and had disposable income so TPC pandered to them. Hoenn just got them because they were next in line for a remake.

That is what Yajima & Tomioka wanted to keep Alain the sole promoter of Mega Evolution.

Game-freak made two different Mega Evolution for Charizard for Ash & Red. I guess they wanted Ash to have Mega Charizard X since it had blue flame which is Ash's color while Red was suppose to have Mega Charizard Y.

This. Ash losing before Leon doesn't make any sense storytelling wise. If they didn't want him to get to Leon then they wouldn't have made Leon Ash's sole focus to begin with. Having Ash lose early and trying to be a modern day Kanto doesn't work either since Kanto was building up towards Ash losing and learning a hard lesson. I don't care about Ash in this series. He's changed in zero ways, he's gone through almost no important personal experiences in like.. 12 years, we already know he won't give a shit if he wins because winning the Alola league had 0 impact on him. The only people who care about this are fanboys who want to brag about "who Ash Ketchum can beat" but as someone who actually likes the kid, I wish he had something of substance to do in this series other than being a boring BATTORU bot. I'm not asking for Shakespeare here, I just want to see some level of personal investment from him, he feels truly soulless and has felt truly soulless since DP.

I think the biggest problem is that Ash literally doesn't have anywhere to go as a character anymore, and he hasn't since DP ended. They tried to shoehorn an "Ash doubts himself" arc in both XY AND JN and it came off as forced melodrama both times because he had next to no reason to actually be doubting himself in either instance

Agreed. He's already got tons of Pokemon, achievements, friends, and experiences. He doesn't gain anything from winning this, only his fanboys do. His slump in XY was beyond shit, completely melodramatic and horrible, at least his PM slump wasn't really the focus of an entire episode and it was more of a mental reaction to getting outplayed in the same way multiple times. It wasn't great but it didn't annoy me like the XY one.

With May, Dawn, and Serena, they made appearances in the anime because they appear as NPCs within the story of the game if you pick the boy, who Ash is always a stand-in for. In every other anime, they've avoided this.

Well, it isn't typical for them to make a rival into a travelling companion. The closest to that we've ever had was May, the player's rival in RSE, and you could argue it was more about getting the female protag design in the anime. Considering Hau and Hop both played bit parts in their respective series, I expect something similar for Nemona.

The best shot we have at a female companion, if that's something that excessively matters to you, is if they make one up entirely. They don't seem too afraid of coming up with OCs, but in the event that they bring Goh forward into the next generation, I doubt they'll want to invent another character to go along with them. To be honest, I wish they would, since Ash is too strong to battle gym leaders, and Goh isn't into competitive battling.

Eh, as an anime trainer it's 90% the onus of his Pokemon. He's made the most out of little and collected a diverse team with a lot of rare Pokemon (starters are considered rare).
I don't think he got meaningfully better between BW and XY, his Pokemon got stronger. And his SM team was easily the strongest team he'd had to that point, even if it was lacking in a top tier ace on the level of Greninja.
The JN team is showing what you get when you give Ash OU Pokemon, of course he's going to take that team further than his regional ones.

Probably a brief 2 second scene during the Leon match. At this point I don't think Misty will get a full episode, JN's will barely have any episodes left after everything they need to cover.

The old companions are probably going to be cameo'd together in the Leon fight. We didn't see Dawn or Cilan in the Iris/Cynthia fight and leaks suggest we probably won't see May or Max for the Ash/Steven right.

So are they fumbling it in the last act. Animation isn't stellar, 2 week break after the opening of the tournament, 1 week break after the first round only for a truly out of place Koharu episode? wtf? she's not even in this storyline, is this going to be a "meanwhile back at the ranch" or is the tournament sending everyone home. Holy fucking this. I'd be more forgiving of these plot points if they weren't resolved by one of Ash's friends having to remind him that one of his core character traits is never giving up and him just getting back to acting like he usually does instantly. Like, at that point it isn't even development on his part, just the writers regressing him for the episode and getting him back where he was while pretending he learned something.
