PLA has one hard battle. USUM is only challenging if you don't use exp share and otherwise only in its one notably hard battle. Neither Volo nor Ultra Necrozma are harder than other difficulty peaks in the series by a "significant margin".

I'll throw you a bone and help you through my post just in case you can't read. I was specifying that Ultra Necrozma was USUM's only notably hard battle only when you're playing with exp share on. The game was reasonably challenging, at least moreso than usual for pokemon, with it off. As for exactly how much more difficult any individual battle in any particular game is than any battle in another game, I don't know or care because difficulty in pokemon is extremely variable. Volo and Ultra Necrozma might be the hardest battles in the series, I haven't really thought about it, I just know that it isn't by a wide margin.

I'm replaying USUM and this fight is pretty hard in the early game too. Furfrou is tanky as fuck, and I actually had to set up Reflect to not get fucked by it. Dartrix barely deals damage to it as it spams Baby Dolls Eyes which makes Razor Leaf useless. It backfires for him though because I have a Contrary Inkay.

Status moves are the worst moves to use in game retard. Toxic only worked by cheesing it and letting my entire team die. It couldn't have worked if I was fighting more than one pokemon. It was only useful in that situation.

I had a hard time beating Hop in the post-game battle in Shield because his mons were in their 70s while my team were in their early 60s, plus his Zacian outsped everything I had and the only thing I had that could deal damage to him was Rocky Helmet Corviknight and my Shadow Sneak Gourgeist. I set up 3x DD with Haxorus and swept him in the rematch. Battles in any Pokémon game are only hard if you get caught off guard or if you're in the early stage of the game before you have any options.

My main issue has always been with the devolution of Exp Share. Mind, what I'm writing here is with the assumption that you're putting in some effort to introduce difficulty. Set battles and no items are obvious requirements here. Not actively grinding as well.
With Gen 6, the EXP Share was added, turned on by default, and the games were not balanced around using it. If you use it, you will be overleveled to all hell. Now, if you turn it off, and play carefully enough, you'll find a more natural progression.
SM and USUM seem to be designed with the EXP Share in mind, so if you do the same as with XY and turn it off, you may end up notably underleveled, and therefore may have to use strategy.
However, with SwSh this all goes out the window. EXP Share is no longer toggleable. With maybe the exception of Leon, who has a very notable level increase compared to anyone else, you will be overleveled by default even if you only ever catch your team, and then battle trainers. You cannot, in a natural way, introduce a notable level difference to create a semblance of difficulty.
I could see myself going back to any other games and have some level of enjoyment out of them, but SwSh has reached a point where I can't do that. I can't and won't comment on anything newer than that because I haven't played them.

A lot of rom hacks like Unbound, Vintage white, Radical red, and especially Emerald Kaizo achieve difficulty by giving every trainer, especially in the early game, an ultra stacked team. The picture is obviously gym 1 from EK. These developers expect you to hack in rare candies, use docs, damage calc, bait in sheet, and ai exploits to nuzlocke it.
