It's nowhere to be found on the Top 100 list from last year. You'd think the story elements would make it the perfect game for that kind of audience, but it ends up being the only generation not there in some form

What story elements? Japan has actual JRPGs and actual visual novels. The alola games were some unholy combination of the two that neither had the nuance of a proper JRPG nor the agency of a visual novel to offset the fact they're usually just a guided tour.
Japs are even more autistic about minor shit than we are, why would they give any credit to the games that axed the National Dex the first time?

Alola is the farthest game removed from what makes Pokemon fun. There was no longer an adventure, but a domestic drama where you aren't even the main character.

Then consider Sinnoh's ranking. A region so massive in scope, sometimes even confusing, that they felt the need to make every game afterwards as linear as possible. Ironically, DP ends up being one of the most popular and iconic regions in the long run.

Japan loves DP as it's basically Japan in a box (the whole region is centred around Japan's creation myth), not because it's "a region so massive in scope yadda yadda". The games became linear because kids are fucking idiots since the turn of the millennium, don't understand pre-noughties game design thus couldn't into Mt. Coronet meaning Game Freak had to change, as they don't want to pitch at oldfags.

SM were the only games besides BW to provide a good story by Pokemon standards. The characters were also very memorable and charming. The legendaries were more grounded in the region's lore. Meanwhile, DP jumped the shark with its legendaries(a literal GOD Pokemon ffs), and who gives a shit about any Sinnoh characters besides Dawn and Cynthia?

These theories don't jive with the fact that Gen 5 is in fourth place, beating out out gens 2 and 3, and even BW2 being the highest non-main gen game.

SM were a quarterbaked XY, which was already half-baked. It was good in premise with the Ultra Beasts, which was also just ripped from scrapped XY concepts, and then nothing else.

Both the Ultra Beasts/Ultra Space and Team Skull were squandered by Game Freak's rigid adherence to the same old formula from Genwun. Alola would have been the best generation if we got to play as a Team Skull grunt or an Ultra Recon Squad member instead of doing the same old fucking shit for the seventh time.
