You dedicate your identity over fictional little creatures, not even people in context, that the series constructs to be closer to cats and dogs, an admission even stated by the series creator. For me it's simply recognizing Pokémon for what they are and the way the series chooses to construct them, for people here it's coming to terms that the series doesn't care for your inanity.
