XY tries too hard. XY isn't bad or anything, the animation is great, the crew is alright, the Pokemon are pretty cool, Ash is badass, but it tries too hard. Random filler has fantastic animation and Ash always feels like he's trying to be an action hero in every scene. The older seasons were more balanced with the comedy, comfy, and cool feels, with XY it's leaning on cool way too much. I'm watching DP at the same time as XY and I'm cringing less at DP if I have to be honest with you.

OS is where the comedy peaked and it has the most soul, Ash vs Drake is still one of the best 6v6s. Still pretty rough though, Misty doesn't have shit going on compared to May or Dawn, Gary has only one fight and it's at the fucking end of the season, and Ash's league loss isn't good when you think about because the show spends a lot of time showing Ash procrastinating so you expect him to get destroyed by someone who knows what they're doing but instead Ash "loses" to a slightly weaker clone of himself. Still though it's really solid, serves as a good blueprint for future seasons so I can't criticize it too hard.

OS's charm (really, just Kanto) is due to the franchise not being so tightly standardized and sanitized as it'd later become. I rewatched a couple episodes a while ago and they're kind of a mess pacing-wise (even the modern seasons are better at that), but it's got an undeniable charm to it that makes it enjoyable.
