I think competitively speaking, the only ones that saw play were already good without it (Charizard, Venusaur, Rillaboom) because if a member of your team is only good with gmax it takes away a lot of freedom. Some of the more powerful effects like GMax lapras still saw some use though, and if you do run a pokemon that's capable of it like Butterfree there's no reason not to have a gmax version.
