Ironically the ape Pokemon looked the least like a fursuit but honestly OP is right, that was easily the worst starters we've ever had. Least they could have done is give them interesting dual typings or something.

Gen 5 and 8 all have awful starters, those are the only 2 gens where I pick the least worse instead of my favorite, although I skipped SwSh since this franchise has been low quality garbage since Gen 6 anyway, only here to see the leaks and not buy the game.

Gen 3, all 3 are great
Gen 4, all 3 are great
Gen 5, all 3 suck, worst set of starters
Gen 6, Greninja is cool, other 2 suck, Chespins final evo is by faaaar the ugliest starter
Gen 7, Decidueye is cool, Smash made me warm up to Incineroar, seal clown sucks
Gen 8, all 3 suck, just not as much as Gen 5
Gen 9 from what I see, only fire starter is any good
