Genuine question, I haven't played them myself. Most people bitching about them give specific reasons why, and nearly every aspect of the games have been criticized. Meanwhile, the people I've seen that actually like these games have only given a "I'm having so much fun teehee!" and occasionally gush about a mon or two. What do you actually like about S/V?

Because it's a monster collecting game where I don't hate more than half the cast of collectible monsters, and up until gen 8 didn't prevent me from obtaining all of them, which is why I skipped it.
I hate gen 9 for the same reasons, but there still hasn't been a pokemon clone that isn't fucking ugly, using mechanics that got stale back in the 2010s, an edgy fan game or Digimon, which sucks Agumon's dick as badly as Gamefreak sucks Charizard's. And Digimon keeps cutting the Digimon I fucking like, so fuck those fucking bastards.

I think OP is asking about SV. I keep seeing people who say it's fun but nobody who expxlains why. To me it just looks like PLA but worse.

Because the core pokemon gameloop is fun. Most people just slog through the shit story so they can raise and battle mons in pvp.

The facial customization was a step up from gen VII, I can't comment on VIII because I skipped it. Expressions are better, too.
I liked bullying Team Star.
Putting Geeta in her place was nice, too.
Area Zero isn't terrible.
I actually felt bad for Arven at the end of the game.
The dog DJ dancing while I beat Ryme's ass was cute.
Katy is an underrated cutie and Iono is definitely in need of a spanking and someone needs to separate Poppy from her Copperajah's pokeball until she learns the meaning of restraint. Miriam isn't bad either but I have a strong dislike for band aids as a fashion statement.
Tera types have potential, and it was kind of funny baiting fairy types into attacking my Goodra with Dazzling Gleam and Moonblast before turning it into a Water type and only taking neutral damage and washing them away with a Surf.
Koraidon messing with Penny to show that it knew she was Cassiopea was almost funny.
Nemona explicitly raising a new team to meet you at your skill level during your journey was a nice touch.
I liked that Clavell is actually a reasonable AND responsible adult who actually cares about the students he's responsible for.
Arven's mom/dad being dead prior to the start of the game after being mortally wounded by an aggressive Koraidon was not a move I expected Gamefreak had the balls to play and I like that they went with it.
Mareep was on an early route. I fucking love Mareep.
Gigaton Smash is a fun move even if Tinkaton's ATK stat is middling.
If I could give Fuecoco the same stats as Skeledirge I would in a hearbeat, I love that little guy.

I like these things about SV but they aren't enough to make it a "great" game, just a "well I could be doing a lot shittier things with my time right now."

I don't know, the game is "good" in the sense that all Pokemon games are 'good'. Its inherently fun to run around an area and catch Pokemon to fill out the dex with your hand picked critters, but the only reason SV is "good" is because its new, not necessarily because it does anything special.

The open world barely functions, there's no level scaling so unless you go a very specific route you're going to spend a huge amount of time overleveled. The lack of the option to turn exp share off means I'm currently leveling ~14 Pokemon and all of them are still stronger than any trainers I face. And when compared to PLA the game is SLOW.

PLA was really fast, I dropped 70 hours into it without even thinking because the gameplay was smooth like butter, the combination of not needing to fight a Pokemon to capture it combined with the updates to the battle system made it so I was always trying to engage with the Pokemon, even if that engagement was shallow.
In SV, they walked back to the fucking 1995 text box system so every battle feels like it takes forever, not even accounting for the awful framerate. I love catching Pokemon and filling out the dex, but I'm at the point where I'm dodging even new Pokemon because battling at the same rate you do in PLA fucking sucks.

Ignoring that, I can tell the game is trying to do something new and grand and different but the lack of things like difficulty settings, level scaling, and just the ability to turn EXP share off makes it so anyone who takes their time to explore is going to have a bad (read: brainlessly easy) time doing the main story. The open world isn't deep or alive and I've yet to see any interesting side content, but I'm still pretty early in. This game gets by off of capitalizing on my wanderlust but not much else.

It's worse than PLA.

I am though, PLA had a lot of flaws (one town, lame quests, flat landscapes) but SV has a lot of those issues PLUS horrible performance and walking back on the improvements PLA introduced. SV probably has more content in it but it doesn't really matter if that content isn't fun to engage with due to Gamefreak's awful balancing and general incompetence.

PLA is like, a 6.5, SV is like a 4 to me so far.

Not him. PLA has better movement and you can throw stuff at Pokémon, you get a bunch of stages and you go around them and when you're done playing you get a report on your activity and points. Most of the stages are too big and have bad level design but the mechanics are fun. From what I've seen so far SV is just PLA but without the mechanics that made it enjoyable. It's just more SM/SS (which I don't like) but with some half-hassed PLA remnants thrown in.

This game is actually awful, not even sword and shield bored me to this extent. The framerate issues, shit animations, bad graphics and slow text boxes all combine into something uniquely terrible. My last hope is that the story will be at least decent, since I'm only a few hours in at this point.
