Also, the gen 1 zukan says nidorina and nidoqueen can't reproduce(and thus reproduction IS understood to some level) and elm in the gen 2 one acts surprised they can't produce eggs(which in the dialogue is never stated to be reproduction, just eggs in katakana being a weird phenomenon). So it seems the natural reproduction and daycare are separate processes. Jacq even adds to this in SV saying the eggs are given to humans because pokemon trust them.
