on Showdown in the battle stadium doubles tier. I feel like Brute Bonnet isn't really pulling its weight. Basically I'm either going slow mode, lead with Indeedee + Hat, set up TR, and sweep with Tera Psychic, or Tera Fire Torkoal, or fast mode, lead with Roaring Moon and Flutter Mane and either hard switch Flutter for Toarkoal or just use Icy Wind/Taunt. Anyone have any suggestions?

correct, Base Amoonguss has a better defensive typing, superior ability, Brute Bonnet has sheer superior stats but physical attackers are easily cucked anyway so he doesn't pull much of his weight. He's good at someone who can take a hit, Spore, or surprise Sucker Punch Flutter Mane but not much else.

What I want to know is how H Braviary is going to do. Tinted Lens with Esper Wing seems halfway decent. Not OU material, I’d imagine, but probably strong in RU or maybe even UU.

Even worse than Gen 8. Arboliva, Scovillain, Toedscruel, and Brambleghast are shitmons. Meowscarada, Wo-Chien, and Brute Bonnet are okay, but they all share the same type. You're basically stuck with

There's also no Rape Ape to set terrain or Grassy Glide to victory. Grass might genuinely be a bottom 3 type in Monotype. Even Bug is better than it.

Funny thing I remember the most about vgc tournaments, there's no such thing as beating certain players without in some cases getting literally screamed at. Or otherwise them throwing a really obvious temper tantrum. When I got 2nd at a regional in 2016 at least 5/8 guys I beat flipped the fuck out when I beat them

I remember in 2016 as well I played this fucking annoying ugly little kid named nerdofnowvgc. He beat me in Swiss like third round and the first game I got like one crit and he's like "That crit mattered!!" In the faggiest voice ever and like. He ended up getting top 16 at that tour, a regional in bumfuck nowhere, and he listed that as his main "accomplishment" on Twitter for a long time haha. You will encounter a lot of faggots with autism like this, they can't tell by the look on your face that you don't want them to talk. After he beat me he knew I would drop from the tournament so he actually tried talking me in to staying, lol, like trying to manipulate me ahaha. I would feel bad for he kid cuz he was like unfortunate looking and 5'7 or so but yeah

I recommend just playing showdown and you'll eventually figure out stuff while playing. It's not like you have to remember the stats and ability of every single pokemon. You just have to remember the stats and abilities of every single strong pokemon.

I will not claimed to have looked into it because bith its typing and base stats are worse than regular Ttar, and while I won't say Quark Drive is garbage it isn't the free Sand Stream. If it had moves that set it apart from Ttar we could talk, but if I can just tera Tyranitar and give him Unerve if I really don't want the sand I just don't see what Thorns has to offer here.

thanks for the replies anons, I'm still trying to re-learn how to play singles (or comp in general) since I skipped the games since probably mid to early ORAS and barely keep up with the meta since then (or remember specific usages), plus I always liked the genies designs so I may as well can try them this gen.
seems like both are kinda nice to have, Thundurus checking speed may be my galvantula replacement unless I can find a more suitable sticky web support. as for Lando, it's a shame hearing he may go to Ubers this gen, really wanted to try it on ladder once I had a more understanding of the current meta, still going to build one just to play with friends.

I played a live tournament in 8th gen, my gothitelle dodged his Lapras' hydro pump or similarly innacurate move and it cost him the game to Perish Song. Dude bounced his switch off the table in frustration and went to the bathroom for a few minutes to cool off. His friend came over, apologized, and took his switch for him, good friend. The one time a TO didn't have to verify who won the match. I went on to lose the tournament to a different guy who was so hopped up on Red Bull that he took his joycons out, stood up out of his chair and was dancing in front of his screen like Hitmontop's idle animation mid match. I was salty because I was told removing joycons was against vgc regulation (I guess anyone could connect their controllers and play for the participant) so I will admit I was rustled that he didn't get told that too.
I've been to homebrew convention pokemon tournaments and they are just as autistic, no suprise the game attracts autists like Sonic the Hedgehog does, at least with online ladders and tourneys you don't have to sit in the same room as them, but I'll still plan on going to VGC events if they're around my area.

Yeah, I've never done online battles on a cart until now. Alright, question about stats.
I've got a Garganacl 100/130/90 defensive stats, and I want to make it as maximally defensive as possible, to physical and special.
It'll be under sandstorm.

So, is it worth doing max hp and spdef EVs? Or is that a wasted attempt at making it specially bulky when its def is SO much higher, and it's only worth pumping into hp and def?
What if I have iron defense on it?

Thanks to anyone kind enough to explain to a simpleton like me.

The way your defense factors into the damage calculation is as a ratio of enemy offense to your defense. This means the closer your defense is to the enemy's attack the closer this ratio gets to 1 and becomes negligible to the rest of the calculation.
>enemy attack 100/ your defense 100= 1
>enemy attack 105/ your defense 100=1.05, a 5% boost in power
>attack 100/ defense 105= .952, almost a 5% reduction in power
The greater the skew the more or less this variable impacts damage. Health in the other hand is directly subtracted from the damage calculated, therefor factoring in after everything else like weather, abilities/items, and boosts to move base powers. What this means is Pokemon like Drifblim or Wailord might have the health pool to tank big hits, but those hits will often be big because their low defense make the power factor high. Ergo, this is why more people build say 126def/126spD on these kinds of pokemon before they'd do 252hp, the damage calculation is kinder if you try to unskew that at/def ratio.
Firstly you need to prioritize what kinds of attacks and moves you'll really prepare for. If you're attempting to be defending everyhing though you want to if possible make your defenses balanced so the math works in your favor.

Also don't forget whatever you're investing in for your nature gets the x1.1 multiplier so for efficiency you almost always want whatever stat you're using your nature on to have more EV investment than a non boosted stat's EVs, after factoring in integer truncation and all.

Here's a fun fact for only the most based of trainers, there are maybe 7 Pokemon who get Tailwind who are grounded; Scizor, Volcarona, Mew, Arceus, Decidueye, Kleavor, and Frossmoth, maybe someone else. Everyone else is a Flying type or levitates. Indeedee gets Fake Out, but you never see it because Psychic Terrain, but if the enemy isn't grounded, they don't get priority immunity.

I'm using Garganacl on my team as win con with body press and iron defense, I ran something similar in VGC20 with corvinight and was No1 on showdown for a while. So I'm looking for a lead that can quickly take out the opposing teams special attackers. in VGC20 I ran AV excadrill with whimsicott for comparison, kind of looking for something similar to that.

I would recommend swapping to regular amoongus, you're running a TR team anyway and your move set is mainly supportive, so the offensive of brute bonnet isn't being used that much, and having indeedee with a brute bonnet whose only attacking is a priority move probably isn't the greatest idea, and given your team is hard trick room, having a priority move like sucker punch runs antithetical to that.

Yeah its really jarring how gamefreak handles their game in regards to reaching its final point.
Even the battle tower never matched what gamefreak did, even in gen 1 it was team preview 3v3(which is why stadium uses the format; it was literally based on tournaments at the time).

Gamefreak barely show off basic battle mechanics(some gimmick trainers might have one item at best these days), "team preview+selection" is not represented ever; not even for single battles.
And doubles are basically a gimmick for like one boss ingame.

The chance to flinch on multihit moves is always 1 - (1-P)^n, or 1 - 0.9^10 in this case, which is 0.6513215599 or 65.1% chance to flinch.

Sandstorm got fucked with the ghostdog ban. I havent seen Tyranitar in ladder in such a long time.
Rain truly is fucked with scald gone and delibird not even carrying defog.
Hail is bad cause the only decent setter is slowking without aurora veil.
Sun right now is the only good weather team and that might change depending if Chi Yu/ Moon can survive the ban.

Destiny knot pulls 5 ivs randomly from the 2 parents, there's no way to reliably get all 6IVs maxxed out from an egg. Closest you can get is Destiny Knot with 2 6iv parents and you have a 1/32 chance (since you just need the one random IV to reroll as 31)

As ghost, the fighting move you're expecting is neutralised, not resisted, and one of your two weaknesses does normal damage.

you don't really need to breed, just buy bottlecaps and hypertrain your pokemon. The only thing you might need to worry about is getting 0IV speed if you really want to go into Trick Room or 0IV attack if you're super worried about Foul Play.

i have a hard time justifying using him over garglemyballs or ting lu, since he dies to any physical hit in a meta where everything hits hard physically. he was really at his best when we needed things to switch into bundle, palafin, and flutter mane, but with them gone, he kinda sucks. also hurts that every special attacker this gen gets psychic coverage or even psyshock.

meowscarada is underrated. banded set with play rough/knock/u-turn/flower trick makes it really tough to switch in on and a strong offensive pivot. notably flower trick 2HKOs dondozo and OHKOs tera water annihilape, and if you predict the switch, you can hit their switchin with a huge u-turn. she's really good since the wincon of like 70% of the teams on ladder are either rape ape or dondozo

i usually lead with him and chunk their leads with dark pulse. he's kind of an opportunist mon. i like to switch him in against the fish if i know they're dp locked or if they've used overheat and ohko with earth power, or against great tusk and OHKO with air slash. he's not crazy good, but he's a EQ immunity/various useful resists that's fast, has good coverage, and hits really hard on the special side. chi yu and iron moth hit noticeably harder but both of them have a much harder switching in.

AV 4 attacks is pretty great if you need a specially bulky physical attacker, but i think most people get more mileage out of hazard stacking with ting lu.

Jolly. Your main goal is to Shed Tail, and attacking is a secondary objective. You want to go as fast as possible to avoid getting hit by as much as possible, because anything that drops Cyclizar below 50% prevents Shed Tail.

Is there a way to stop Prankster Murkrow from getting a tailwind off? It's dark type so a prankster taunt won't work. I guess Trick Room would work afterwards but unless your team is built for that I feel like it could backfire.
