I am so tired of modern Pokemon. The premise of each game is rote and unevolved, you're always a child setting out for your journey, and that journey is always disappointingly short. The difficulty is trivial now, the Pokemon designs themselves fucking suck. It's not interesting, it's not cool, it's not hard. I need something new.

I've heard good things about romhacks but I have no idea where to start, or if it's even where I should be looking. Are there other Pokemon games or projects I should be looking at to get out of this rut or are romhacks the way to go? What's the best options? For reference Gen 3 was my favorite, followed closely by Gen 2.
