As many have pointed out in the past the way JN has gone has just irreversibly damaged the universe of the Pokemon anime (such as it was, anyway). The preceding 7 generations and 20+ years of anime, at the end of the day the scale of the adventure was still "10 year old boy adventures and then competes in regional tournaments occasionally". SM didn't really break that, because winning one league doesn't mean you'll win another. Even if Ash won Kalos back in XYZ it wouldn't have done it either.

Making the PWC the end-all be-all "these are the strongest trainers in the entire world" and even making Ash participate in the final tournament, let alone fucking win the whole thing was just such a retarded decision from a series longevity standpoint.

I know people like to say it's not any different from them pressing the reset button in the past, but I don't agree with that at all. This was categorically completely different. I don't know if the memes are true about this just being one long apology for the Kalos League loss but this was just too big of an overcorrection. This is without even bringing up the fact that they already used up a ton of the nuclear option fan service things that you'd think would be reserved for a final series (Ash getting Lucario, returning mons, lots of cameos, Mezase Pokemon Master Pikachu climax). You can't just keep doing those things forever.

Anyway I of course know this is a stupid ass kodomo anime and it doesn't matter at the end of the day, but you'd think someone would've brought up this issue at some point in the writer's room if the intent was always to keep going on forever as they always have.

Nemona is literally the strongest person in Paldea and already beat the champion when you first meet her. Having her beat the established strongest champion in the anime when she makes her debut is a good way to establish her. In the animeverse, having her beat Leon will be more impressive than having her beat Geeta, a character we know nothing about.

I know for a fact that this general has a Goh bias because anytime there were hints about Goh potentially leaving, the thread dismisses them. But here we have unconfirmed episode titles claiming that he's staying and instead the threads believe them without any skepticism.

Gonna need an exact source. Do we even know if the 2chan source is reliable? Maybe if we got actual pics or stuff that actually show those titles, then yes they're real. But until that happens, have some skepticism since the leakers this time don't seem to be reliable.

Do you guys really enjoy the anime as it is right now? There is no motivation at this point, there's no drama or stakes. I mean, that was why Ash's journey up to now was so powerful, he would get to these tourneys and fight only to lose and find resolve in getting stronger. Now he's the strongest. Where can you go once you have completed your goal?

There technically is potential in the "what happens after you win it all" story, but this is a dumb kodomo anime so nobody should expect that sort of complexity.

IMO their best choice would be to mix up Ash's goal somehow. Technically SV does have the elements for that in the Herba Mystica and Team Star stories, but you just know they'd rather just go with the "gotta beat Nemona" story out of laziness.

There has to be a reason for that then. Usually these leakers get picked up by the usual people quickly. In addition, even PokeFansTaiwan said the episode titles are "unconfirmed", so I have no idea why /padt/ is acting like they're confirmed. If even Adamant said they were legit, then there I'd act as if it's official confirmation. But PokeFansTaiwan not only said that they're unconfirmed, but the account hasn't been the best when it comes to reliability ever since Moon retired.

It just bugs me because they purposefully stripped out a lot of his complexity and character. It makes me think of the old Indigo Plateau days when he had some sass and would actually talk back to people. Of course, he just feels extremely cookie cutter basic now. He doesn't really do strategy, just asspulls and gimmicks. I hated the usage of counter shield in DPPt, and the weird moves he would pull in RSE, but in some ways they showed ingenuity. Aside from literally electrocuting a bird until it gets golden armor.

I keep hoping to see something better, but the anime seems comfortable with the status quo as it is. Why fuck around with something that works? It just feels so dead inside and stops having any magic behind it. Kinda like real life. It makes me enjoy the moments they do make Pokemon anime that breaks the formula and actually tries to be original and interesting. This might just be me though, I see most of you seem hyped for another season of the same thing over again. Don't let me rain on your parade.

I like the concept of the World Tour as far as filler episodes are concerned (which is like 70+% of the show so it's not like it's unimportant).

They need to reconsider how they structure Ash's journey in this new format if they continue with it but I don't think it bad because of the format.

I'm alright with Goh but I really really hated how Koharu was handled and I felt like it was a waste of time any time she had focus in an episode. In fairness I'm pretty sure she was initially intended to just be a side character anyways, but the lazy Eevee shilling they threw her way was just annoying nonetheless. At least write a proper female companion if you're going to do that.

Like I said before, while I'm skeptical of him staying, I'm not against the idea and I'll even look forward to seeing him in Paldea if the titles do turn out to be true. I'm not sure I'm really following you here. You don't like that Ash doesn't use strategies but then you also don't like counter shield, which probably the most well-developed consistent strategy Ash ever came up with? The only other thing that comes remotely close is Rock Tomb Tomb and even that felt like it got dropped later into XY.
I can at least understand what you mean if you're saying counter shield as a concept is something you don't like, but I think the actual usage of counter shield in the plot was the best thing the show ever did as far as consistent strategies is concerned. Otherwise a lot of the things Ash comes up with are asspulls either way. Even moments I love like Infernape melting Toxic Spikes or whatever can be considered asspulls if you look at them from the right angle.

I said that I didn't like them, but I liked the ingenuity he demonstrated. Hell, it was awesome that his countershield was turned against him by Paul who really demonstrated how Ash wasn't the only one who could use them. I dunno, I think this generation just exhausted me when it showed Ash putting on all of the gimmicks for his team of Pokemon that aside from Pikachu.. didn't feel speciial or important given the gravity of the fight he was getting into. Plus, his enemies seemed limited in what gimmicks they could pull on him instead of bringing out everything that was open to him.

Gotcha. I think those are all pretty common criticisms that have been thrown around here. Personally, I think the big problem here all goes back to one thing. It isn't so much that they've completely changed the way they (particularly Tomioka) writes Ash's ingenuity because I think we actually got plenty of that in the Masters 8, but rather that JN had a problem with doing setups at an appropriate timeframe, so when they pay them off it just doesn't feel that good.

JN's climax felt like the writers were doing their semester project the night before the due date. Very shortly before the M8 we had Leon/Ash conversation episode, the Sirfetch'd/Dracovish friendship, and that Paul episode where they set up 3 new moves. All this stuff should've been spread out over the series run a lot more, then it would've felt a lot better when it all paid off. Even if all the Masters 8 were using all 3 gimmicks, they might've improved the battles individually but wouldn't really check the storytelling boxes that made the best battles in the past.

Hell, remember how climatic they made Lucario learning Steel Beam feel? Then he used it all of once after that, and not even in an actual battle. Just bad planning.

Yeah, it really felt like for something as big and as important as the M8 was, they really didn't give it the time or due that it needed. It should have been a stand-alone thing like the Battle Frontier or something that deserved time to develop and grow. It just reminded me too much of the things that bothered me as a whole. The thing that I've enjoyed most about PM19 is their friendship. It's been the only consistently entertaining part of PM19. Everything else has been a mess, with PWC battles being hit or miss, and companion returns sometimes delivering, other times falling short. The Ash/Goh stuff has always been on point, though. I love the concept of the World Tour, but damn has the execution ever been sloppy, and the number of missed opportunities is ridiculous. PM19 had the potential to be the best season of the anime ever; so many past locations/characters could've been revisited, while introducing game locations/characters that were passed over in past seasons. All we know in that regard is that those titles are definitely NOT in any of the guides that were released in the past week detailing December's listings, and January, naturally, isn't even present in them as a whole

Why would they do that? Even if he's unpopular, Pokemon Go still brings in insane cash. They'd take a small hit for a larger return since it means keeping whales in and potentially bringin in new ones.

no they wouldn't, that's a pointless risk.
He's unpopular but he does his job at making Pokemon Go appear successful. If they need to bump Pokemon Go's popularity, they have other, better avenues for that, such as Project Mew itself.

If the character is literally hated, the risk is minimal. It even gives them a PR excuse. But Goh is only unpopular.
