How do we define a game as difficult? Is it simply just encountering an enemy and losing because of a strategy you didn't know about? If so, then all games have used that trick at least once. I'm not sure if any elements of the game are difficult to execute outside of that.

the AI in g1 is extremely predictable once you know how it works, and due to software limitations nearly every opposing Pokemon only knows their level-up moves. this leads to shit like Blue's Pidgeot having Whirlwind during the champion fight, a move that in G1 trainer battles does FUCKING NOTHING.

Gen 5 vanilla only gets challenging during B2/W2's post game PWT matches.

None of them are hard.
The best you can measure is how hard it is to grind in a game. In that sense Colosseum would be hardest since it's a pain in the ass to purify shadow pokemon, and they won't level until after you purify them. Plus the only grinding spot is Mt Battle which is a huge pain in the ass.

Torchic, Chimchar and Tepig are the easy modes of Gen 3-5(FireRed/LeafGreen and HeartGold/SoulSilver not accounter for).
Their second stage and wide move pools pretty much trivializes the Gyms and Elite 4 and Battle Facilities.

Outside of that, I'd say Emerald's Battle Frontier off the top of my head. I'll point out B2W2 for having actual VGC champion teams being used in the PWT if you got the DLC.

If we're only talking about the storyline, the obvious answers are bdsp Cynthia and Legends arceus volo+giratina, nothing comes close, so the last two games before scarlet/violet were actually the ones with the hardest battles

They're definitely the hardest games in the franchise, not that they're difficult or anything, but quite a few of the totem pokémon can demolish you if you're not overlevelled, and ultra necrozma is the single most difficult encounter in the franchise

Bro, that entire game was made to be fucked by Swamperts massive cock. There's a reason that all the RSE speedruns just pick Mudkip, and run it through the entire game. Hell, the single most dangerous part of the game is a singular trainer in Brawly's gym, not even the Leader himself

I liked SV but there's no way you can say SS was less difficult than the game where the trainer whose ace is a hazard setter has to be sent out last while her Pokemon very specifically meant to benefit from having all your Pokemon dead is scripted to be sent out third.

The only way SV is difficult is if you go out of your way to challenge like, the ice gym first or something. But at that point you can just put it above most of the others including USM

This seems accurate for the most part but I think old games like GSC and RB are more challenging than the remakes because the movesets are worse. Also I haven't played SV or SWSH but I can't imagine them being easier than XY or ORAS(which you didn't mention). Even with my usual play style (exp share off, no affection, no items or TMs) in gen 6 it felt impossible for any of my pokemon to get ko'd.

You dont know how bad the exp share is until you are forced to use it... Megas make gen 6 very easy but in gen 8 dynamaxing complete fodderizes everything on top of this you get it earlier can use it every pokemon. Unlike megas which you to evolve a pokemon to its final evolution and then find the stone that allows them to evolve taking up an item slot... SV is easier just because forced exp share is that rediculous and there are very few hard fights if any at all.

I did forget oras, it beside xy being a tiny bit harder

BW2 was hardest for me with just Samurott ace of my team, with two other mons.

The hardest Pokemon experience was unintentionally picking Riolu and Eevee on Sky, the hardest duo, Dialga shit on me a lot. Eevees special ability was Run Away.

The past temples from Guardian Sign, my man.
"A Shock Everywhere You Turn" (the Magnezone one) in particular requires you to farm for hours (did it at level 44 I think) if you plan to take it solo.
If you intend to go all the way through to Arceus, you'll have to farm until around level 70 and tryhard a whole fucking lot.

Eh, I dunno. The only battle that made me sweat just a little was Ghetsis, and maybe the PWT? I feel like Platinum gave me a little more trouble. Cyrus, Cynthia and most of the Elite Four all have pretty respectable teams.
