You are 100% correct for pokemon and anybody that disagrees is a complete retard. You can make a good open world game like Elder Scrolls or GTA but that takes years (even a decade) of work and development to ensure the world is filled with unique and exciting content in every area. Create a world not a barren landscape with copy pasted content. Pokemon can't do that because they only spend 2-3 years (I'm guessing) on a game so it ends up half baked, broken, and ugly. The thing is that creatures does all the pokemon models so all GF needs to do it build the world and the game and not fuck it up. I hope that even the people who enjoy shitty open world pokemon games can admit that the games could be so much better given time and skill.

No I agree honestly. In SV when you are done with story you don't really feel like going anywhere since it's all so samey and empty. I vastly prefer the premade sections which you can get around relatively quickly

Truly good Pokemon map design is semi-linear tour around region with multiple branching outs and optional areas. There may or may not be some part allowing player for open exploration but there still should be a clear direction.

The issue isn't the hallway, it's that the hallway is actually 8 separate hallways with doors that you can only pass through after beating the gym leader standing in front of them. What that anon is suggesting is a long hallway with all 8 gym leaders in it; you still go from gym 1 to 8 in order, but can run through the full hall without fighting a single leader.

Open worlds can be boring, but handholding simulators can be infuriating.
Granted, most of the fault lies on not having a skip button for cutscenes, but if we just had a choice between those two, OW is the least bad option for GF.

Never brought up PLA. PLA is an open zone game, each zone opens up and is locked behind the previous one, but once inside a zone you can do it in whatever order you want (except when you lack certain movement options)

Just a talk about how myself and others I suspect are getting tired or just dont like open world games as much. Thinking about the games ive gotten hooked on, none are strictly open world at all. Fire Emblem Three houses, Persona 5 Royal and DQ 11s ive all spent 30hrs or more in without getting tired and playing something else. Even great open world games like BOTW, Witcher 3, and I suspect cyberpunk arent going to hook me and ill lose interest quickly. Something about them just doesnt keep in engaged long enough for how long they expect me to play. But I still find myself trying to like and get into them. Not sure if others feel the same or not.

Call it a gameplay loop or whatever, but “linear” games just feel better to play. You’re not going around running aimlessly doing tasks. I feel like DQ 11s does demonstrates the restraint perfectly. Its not an open world game, but there are still side quests. They are just on the main path towards the main story. It never feels like im wasting time by exploring or traveling in the game. The story moves along, and the exploration and discovery that open world games promise is still there to some extent. Wondering if others feel the same way. Whats an open world game that hooked you, and why?

Linear design is easier to get wrong as it requires a lot more meticulous detail. If you're on a set path there better be interesting things every few steps cause the player's agency is more limited. More often than not Pokemon didn't deliver it, people don't like to admit it but most routes were just a line possibly with a turn. If you're lucky there was a break in the fence where there was a 2x2 patch of grass. More engaging design was usually reserved for the very end. If a player wishes to find a certain pokemon, ignore story or focus on other content they still have to progress down the same path at an intended pace.

Open world is easier to get right cause it more quickly delivers the content players actually want. They want to run off and find pokemon. Don't like story? You aren't on a set track where the only path to the desert location is through 1 hour of dialogue. You can go all in on online content out the gate. Meanwhile an open world game can still produce linear segments like dungeons, so it can have the best of both worlds. In fact if you like the linear experience nothing actually stops you just going from point to point like a linear game. People who say open world games have no content ignore that they make it easier to do the activities big fans will waste 100s of hours on.

Can go straight to online content? Yep
Can just play in a linear fashion if you want? Yep
Can do the story at your own pace skipping past it to new areas? Yep
Can go straight to catching pokemon? Well pretty its the only open world offering that.
Can go straight to breeding/shiny hunting/com training? Yeah hang on these last two really are pokemon exclusive.

Only thing it doesn't really offer is linear sections. Well apart from your first time in Area 0 but we'll just say that doesn't count so you get a point on the board.

Open world games are expensive and player and critic expectations for open world games are high.

If they intend to go open world they're going to have to drop the 2-3 year development cycle for these games. They're going to become more expensive to make and require way more people to produce it.

And no one wants the boring ass linear content of the same quality. No I get that a retard can waste 100s of hours on a crafting menu looking like a basedjack, but I can't pretend that I don't find it absolute garbage. I don't think this game's open world is bad except for the awful cities. Still, I'd rather have a bland open world than be held tightly by the hand and dragged down a hallway. If they go back to hallways, I'm not playing that game. Why even talk about hallways? It'd be better to ask for huge routes full of secrets to find and trainers/pokemon. Who would ever want a hallway?

And not just the shitty barren caves and literal-tunnels like what we got, but temples, dense forests, abandoned facilities, maybe even entire fucking abandoned towns.
Some of them you can try to tackle without bothering to find the relevant story beats, some can be locked off until plot demands it.
